FREE MAKEOVER @ SEPHORA

OK, so it’s been a while.  I have awesome excuses: I started a new job last Monday and I passed my oral exam (for PhD comprehensives) last Wednesday.  This weekend, I did the minimum.  I was freaking exhausted from trying to balance working long hours and studying. This is why I specifically saved my “free makeover” card for Saturday (a perk of the VIB status).  For more, read here!

I RAN FOR MY LIFE

Last week, I saw an awesome presentation from a runner that really motivated me to take up running again.  Hi T.J.  Any who, running is not new to me but I haven’t been an effective runner since high school.  I have really good excuses, here me out.  First, my neighborhood is super hilly.  Ain’t nobody got time for that.  Secondly, I go…what I have coined…”pig.”  I struggle with the breathing routine that is required for a long distance run; therefore, I end up wheezing after about 3 minutes on the track -_-  For more, read here!

CLASSIC MULTITASKER CONCEALER BRUSH #21

This summer’s heat has been disrespecting my makeup lately.  Interestingly, my concealer hasn’t been there for me either.  Make Up For Ever’s Full Cover Concealer is the best Sephora has to offer so is it overrated or is it me?  Of course, it’s me.  The Beauty Advisor (that’s what they’re called) asked “how do you apply it?”  Me: “With my finger or sponge.” This was the problem, I needed a concealer brush.  For more, read here!

THE EEPHUS

I’ve waited so long for this EP. Due to delays, two singles were released to hold us over: Jidenna’s “Classic Man” and Janelle Monae’s “Yoga.” Although this album is a compilation of artists signed to Monae’s Wondaland Records, I am such a fan of hers that I downloaded it without listening… Grrrrr  For more, read here!

FREE MINI FACIALS @ SEPHORA

Yeah, so I saw this sign last week and decided to pop back in and take them up on their offer. We briefly discussed my skin type (oily like a mutha), skincare products(everythang Murad) and routine.  Because I’ve been using Murad for so long, its time for me to switch up and per the skin specialist, their products may be too harsh. Also, I had to throw away my face brush. Apparently, the head is supposed to be changed every two months but I’ve been using it for like two years or more.  For more, read here!

WE NEED TO TALK...

Gather around kids, we need to talk.  From all of my introvert posts you can conclude that I’m kind of a quiet person, hanging in the background watching the scene…  Sometimes, my eyes focus on details more than I would like.  Like, I end up looking at hands, elbows, knees, feet and for the last few weeks there has been a common theme: ASH

Guys, it takes about 3 minutes out of your entire day to moisturize your skin.  And, you’re not doing it just for fun, there are benefits: keeps skin hydrated, smooth calluses and rough spots, and makes your skin glow J If you want to go all out, do it before bed and the next morning, it’ll make you look and feel like Cleopatra!

But, I feel like I need to say a few more things before ending this convo.  Being of the lighter complexion does not exempt you, you are still ashy.  Moisturizing only the visible parts of your skin is cheating, you are still ashy.  And although there are a host of lotions readily available to you, skip those.  Some of you are moisturizing and are still ashy.  You guys need the natural stuff from the mother land.  Shea butter, coconut oil, etc.  Find it at your local Whole Foods or natural grocery stores.

ALL ABOUT THAT BASE

My need for base and top coats is why I made that Sunday trip to Sephora.  Instead of opting for my usual base coat (Read: Hard Rock), I bought Deborah Lippmann's All About That Base CC Base Coat.

The Deets: "A multitasking CC formula that provides 10 nail treatment benefits and immediate nail-perfecting coverage in one.  This CC nail treatment is formulated with a special hydrating complex infused with panthenol, which helps to moisturize, strengthen, and protect the look of nails while treatment correctors assist with concealing imperfections, brightening, priming, and filling in ridges for a smooth and matte, flawless-looking finish with improved wear. This multipurpose polish can be used as a base coat with one coat, or apply two coats for a matte, modern look."  Equally important, this product is a five-free formula (formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene, dbp (dibutyl phthlate), or camphor) and was not tested on animals.  Question: How does one test a base coat on animals?  I would think any animal would consider it an honor.  Who wouldn't want their paws protected?

I do like that this base coat dries as a nude matte; however, I am highly unlikely to wear it like that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  Because it's a base coat, it's kind of hard to review.  I'm fine with my base coat simply being a hardener but this one has a host of other benefits I don't care about...  However, I find solace in knowing that using Deborah Lippmann as base and top coats will result in long-lasting and the appearance of professional manicures. Retails for 20 bucks!  Shop my frenemy, Sephora.

NYX'S NEMESIS: UD'S DE-SLICK MAKEUP SETTING SPRAY

I didn't realize that when I blogged about NYX's Matte Finish Make-up Setting Spray, I was nearly out if it. Instead of repurchasing it, I bought Urban Decay Cosmetics's De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray. I have been wanting to try it for a while and I do need something to blog about... Why else are you here?

Any who, "Urban Decay's De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray mists on weightlessly to prevent makeup meltdown as it controls oil, deflects surface shine and keeps skin looking beautifully matte. High-tech ingredients help keep foundation, shadow and blush from smudging, sliding or fading - so you hardly ever need to touch up. Your makeup will look just-applied for hours (even if it's not)." Source: Ulta

So...not only is Urban Decay one of the most successful makeup brands but it's def a favorite of mine.  However, I can't say that I like the spray.  Actually when I sprayed, I almost blasted my makeup off. But then there is this thing called "directions" that I really didn't follow (as usual). Per the directions  "Shake well. Apply just before foundation to control oil and again after makeup to deflect surface shine and lock makeup in place. Hold the bottle 8" - 10" away and mist face 2-4 times, in an "X" and "T" formation."

I think it's worth mentioning that I bought a sample (14 bucks) and if I like it (after following directions) I still won't pay the full price.  I can't imagine spending 30 bucks for setting spray; especially, because I already use a matting spray and primer *shoulder shrug*

CONTINUED BABY MAMA DRAMA WITH SEPHORA...

In the event some of you don't know, Sephora will be launching a subscription box service.  The 10-bucks-a-month subscription entitled "Play!" is described as "knowledge and all of Sephora in a box." Not only will it include brands from its store but a book with tips and hacks.  Are you excited? Don't be... The subscription will first be tested in Boston, Cincinnati and Columbus.  No shade but those cities are so random, lol.  Eventually, it'll expand into more markets in 2016.  Basically, some of us may be waiting forever...  I mean, is the subscription hand delivered or something?

While restocking at Sephora yesterday, something interesting happened.  After my purchases, I became a VIB aka Very Important Beauty Insider. Perks include all beauty insider benefits, first dibs on new products, seasonal gifts, advance access to sales and private shopping events.  At checkout I received coupons for a free makeover, 10% off my next purchase and free shipping.  I was shocked that I've spent so much at Sephora because we're frenemies.  I like them more than Ulta because they are more likely to have everything I need BUT what's up with their sales?! Or, lack thereof.  Ulta has a coupon that can be used every single day, customers can occasionally get 10% off prestige brands, and points equal cash off! CASH OFF! C A S H  OFF!

As usual, I ranted to the associate that checked me out.  I don't know if she really cared but did agree. They always agree with me.  However, these new "perks" may force me to shop with them more often than usual.  They were even doing free mini facials today.  Sephora you could be my fave but you playing -_-

MEH...3C CONCEAL CORRECT CONTOUR PALETTE

So...I've been doing a little research on contour palettes.  After evaluating the list, I decided to go with NYX because it's the cheapest.  Duh! However, it isn't just a contour palette, it also contains concealer.

"Wake up your face with the ultimate concealer palette in six color correcting shades. NYX Cosmetics 3C Conceal Correct Contour Palette is a lightweight, non-creasing formula which glides on for an ultra-smooth finish and leaves skin feeling soft and supple."  Source: Ulta

I selected the palette in "dark" and used it to conceal, highlight and contour.  Once again, duh.  I actually used the concealer under my normal concealer and thought the contouring was ok but I wasn't terribly excited with the highlighter. To be quite honest, I think it's more of me not knowing what to do than the palette.  I DON'T KNOW HOW TO CONTOUR ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  which is why I had to keep my first real attempt at it cheap. 3C Conceal Correct Contour Palette retails for $11.99 (don't forget your Ulta coupon).

BLOOD

Welcome back to my amatuer music reviews. Today, I present Lianne La Havas's "Blood."  One of my favorite podcasts (Another Round) interviewed Lianne La Havas last week and us listeners got a little background info as well as a heads up on her upcoming album.

So I'll be honest, I've seen a ton of pictures of her.  I love her hair and style and figured she was a singer but never did any research.  After the interview, I listened to some of her music and was fairly confident I would be purchasing her album.

*waits two days* Bright and early on Friday morning, I downloaded it. During her interview she stated that she didn't want her music to be classified; however, she is classified as a soul and folk singer... ...  ...  shhhh...  I would also add that her album contains a dash of rock.  Just one pinch.

I'm adding this to the list of albums I can listen to from beginning to end.  This album makes me want to kind of drift off.  Just lay in the grass and gaze into the sky.  But, I won't.  I have stuff to do, am allergic to grass and it's hot outside.  So far, my favorite songs are Unstoppable (because it's the song I'm most familiar with) and Ghost.  At one point today, I listened to Ghost back to back for like an hour.  Take a listen, you won't regret it.
