Guess I'll be adding another book to the roster of unread books.  No but seriously, since I'll be taking a month break, I intend to knock out 1 to 2 books a week (but don't hold your breaths).

“A #GIRLBOSS is in charge of her own life. She gets what she wants because she works for it.”

The first thing Sophia Amoruso sold online wasn’t fashion—it was a stolen book. She spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and dumpster diving. By twenty-two, she had resigned herself to employment, but was still broke, directionless, and working a mediocre day job she’d taken for the health insurance.

It was there that Sophia decided to start selling vintage clothes on eBay. Eight years later, she is the founder, CEO, and creative director of Nasty Gal, a $100 million plus online fashion retailer with more than 350 employees. Sophia’s never been a typical CEO, or a typical anything, and she’s written #GIRLBOSS for outsiders (and insiders) seeking a unique path to success, even when that path is winding as all hell and lined with naysayers.

#GIRLBOSS includes Sophia’s story, yet is infinitely bigger than Sophia. It’s deeply personal yet universal. Filled with brazen wake-up calls (“You are not a special snowflake”), cunning and frank observations (“Failure is your invention”), and behind-the-scenes stories from Nasty Gal’s meteoric rise, #GIRLBOSS covers a lot of ground. It proves that being successful isn’t about how popular you were in high school or where you went to college (if you went to college). Rather, success is about trusting your instincts and following your gut, knowing which rules to follow and which to break.

A #GIRLBOSS takes her life seriously without taking herself too seriously. She takes chances and takes responsibility on her own terms. . She knows when to throw punches and when to roll with them. When to button up and when to let her freak flag fly.

As Sophia writes, “I have three pieces of advice I want you to remember: Don’t ever grow up. Don’t become a bore. Don’t let The Man get to you. OK? Cool.  Then let’s do this.”

This book drops May 6th but you can preorder on Amazon, iBooks and probably anywhere books are sold, duh :)

Leila Schott
I've been quite the local lately.  I'll be blogging about local businesses and events in upcoming posts.  So, while volunteering at an event Saturday, I was immediately attracted to this tent full of jewelry which happened to be  Leila Jewelry Designs by Leila Schott.

Leila Jewelry Designs is based out of Madison, Mississippi and has been around for about 5 years.  Schott's business grew from her love of arts and crafts and work at a bead shop.

"I love making new things, finding design inspiration almost everywhere, and I’m always trying new materials and design elements."

Her favorite materials include gold, silver, freshwater pearls, semiprecious stones, wood, bone, copper, and brass."

To minimize inundating you with photos, I've uploaded everything to my new Flickr account.

Side note: After I volunteered, I headed back to Leila's booth and bought a beautiful silver necklace with a  semiprecious stone.  It's the picture I recently posted on Instagram (which you should be following).

Any who, shop Leila Jewelry Designs or contact her if there's a piece you see on my Flickr that's not in her store.

Now that my doctoral coursework is completed *insert applause* I plan on indulging in Reality TV just like normal people.

So, I found out about this show around the second episode, did a quick Google search and decided it was something I wanted to give a try.  Well today, I watched all 3 episodes and I'm excited for the upcoming episodes. Unfortunately, it airs on Saturdays which means I won't be seeing it until Sunday.  Who watches TV on Saturdays?  Eck!

About: "Big Cities are never easy to navigate, but these four fabulous women, Kiyah, Bershan, Chenoa, and Tiffany are taking NYC head on. Having known each other for over ten years, they are close enough to always keep it real. Through their laughter, romances, and life-altering struggles, they are learning that there is much more than just sex in the city. They dont always see eye-to-eye and spend a lot of time dealing with conflicts that arise between their big personalities. But underneath it all, they have an incredibly strong bond and always support each other as they deal with their own unique life challenges."

So far, I feel like Kiyah is the ring leader and Tiffany doesn't belong.  She just doesn't appear to have a natural chemistry with the group...  Although we know about Berhsan's Breast Cancer, I still feel like I don't know.  Chenoa is my favorite and it's probably because I relate to her in a few ways.  Side note: I really hope things work out between her and her husband because their love jumps off the screen.  I thought love was enough but we all know how men want to continue the bloodline or whatever...

Besides the dash of drama, I'm def watching to experience NYC through their lenses, for the fashion and to observe how uber successful women balance their lives (because I plan to be one).

Hopefully, I can make this into a weekly recap but don't hold your breathes...y'all know I'm a flake!

The Confidence Gap- The Atlantic

By: Katty Kay and Claire Shipman

Evidence shows that women are less self-assured than men—and that to succeed, confidence matters as much as competence. Here's why, and what to do about it.

For years, we women have kept our heads down and played by the rules. We’ve been certain that with enough hard work, our natural talents would be recognized and rewarded.  For more, read, here!

*cue Pharrell's "Happy"*  After 11 years of being in Jackson and countless posts of me bitching about my terrible salon experiences, I've finally found a place I can call home: The Nail Bar!

I happen to be driving by when I saw a sign that read "The Nail Bar"  and after checking out both their Facebook and Instagram pages, I thought I'd give them a try.  Luckily, someone canceled their appointment and I was able to slide right in.

As soon as I walked in, they were waiting for me.  The salon had a simplistic theme (which I liked) and a wall of retail (polishes and jewelry).  Also, clients were able to chose colors from the latest OPI and Essie collections.

My manicurist was Yolanda and as soon as she got me safely situated at the pedi station, I was offered something to drink.  Overall we had a great conversation and she did an awesome job on my nails.  Most importantly, she did not ruin my cuticles like most manicurist do.  The total cost for the mani/pedi was 60 bucks which is pretty standard and affordable to me. more shopping mall nail salons, I've finally made it home!

Side note: You can check out a photo of my mani on my Instagram page and there's a photo of my mani and pedi on their Facebook and Instagram pages but don't look at toes look chubby, lol.

So...some of you may know this but if you don't, H&M is my favorite store!

Alexander Wang is H&M’s next guest designer. The collection will hit the stores in November this year.

This is the first time that an American designer teams up with H&M, and the Alexander Wang x H&M collection will feature apparel and accessories for both men and women.

The New York based fashion designer’s eponymous brand has firmly established itself by perpetually evolving and re-contextualizing the urban uniform, since it was launched on the runway in 2007.  Alexander Wang’s core sensibility is a reflection on contrasts, blending seamlessly between the refined and the imperfect.  His collections have an unprecious outlook on fashion, and always reflect a sense of ease.

I don't know about you guys but I will be the first in line November 6th!  You know what, I think I'm going to go ahead and pitch my tent and camp out right now.

What I meant to say is Essie's Good to Go Top Coat... Gather around kids, it's time for another bitchfit.

"The fastest drying topcoat around! This unique, patented formula, found in top salons, penetrates through fresh polish to completely dry it - almost instantly! Provides a chip-resistant, non-yellowing, glossy finish for the perfect manicure."

So...hmmm...  This top coat definitely has shine but about this rapid dry, um, I don't know about all that.  I had to sit still for quite a while to prevent smudging.

I blame you guys.  Y'all have me trying all kinds of top coats knowing that I stand for Deborah Lippmann but I'm trying real hard not to be a brand whore :)

Side note: WTH does finition mean?  Is it French or something?

That picture has almost nothing to do with this post but I thought it was super cute...

Any who, I just gave myself a body scrub about 30 minutes ago (TMI) and realized that while I did tell you guys about the scrub I use, I didn't tell you why you should do body scrubs.

The health and beauty benefits of a body scrub:

A scrub works in a few ways: As you massage it over your body, the exfoliating granules help to slough off dead skin, and the rubbing action itself boosts circulation and helps drain your lymph nodes, by increasing blood flow to the skin’s surface.

Common ingredients in store-bought scrubs are salt, sugar and crushed nut shells, and some include chemical exfoliants, like alpha hydroxy and glycolic acids, which can help smooth and firm skin, and salicylic acid, which can help improve the appearance of blemishes or redness. You can make your own buffing scrub with ingredients like olive oil, honey, raw sugar, ground cloves, oatmeal and even ground coffee. Adding your favorite essential oils to the mixture transforms your shower into an aromatherapy session.

While it's probably easier to go to a spa, I would rather pay 8 bucks for my favorite scrub and do it myself.  I usually give myself a scrub every Sunday and place the scrub in all reachable areas.

And, if you don't know by should probably do this while you're in the shower :)

"When a little boy asserts himself, he's called a “leader.” Yet when a little girl does the same, she risks being branded “bossy.” Words like bossy send a message: don't raise your hand or speak up. By middle school, girls are less interested in leading than boys—a trend that continues into adulthood. Together we can encourage girls to lead."

I saw a commercial for this campaign on Lifetime (don't judge me) and thought it should be something you guys could spread because it's a very necessary cause.  Speaking from experience, I have to always be mindful of how I express myself to reduce being labeled as a b**** but I digress...

Not only does this campaign provide leadership tips for girls, teachers and parents but they also provide tips for managers (which I'm going to read shortly) #awesomeness

Glamour Era
Winter brought out my wild alter lip ego.  I wore deep purple, burgundy, blue and red.  Not at the same time, of course.  While this confusing Spring season rolls in (one day it's hot, the next it's freezing and the day after it's a monsoon), I've decided to go nude.  I'm talking about lipstick!

Disclaimer: These nudes are perfect for my skin tone which is medium brown/dark or whatever...

To achieve the nude lip, I've looked to MAC's Glamour Era (mineralize rich lipstick) and Touch (lipstick).  Touch is my favorite because it's the exact color of my lips.  For some, that probably doesn't make any sense but like most lips, I have a bit of discoloration and this gives me perfect, even and long lasting color.  Although, I'm falling in love with Glamour Era because it glides on smoothly and gives me a hint of color.

I guess it would be nice to post a picture of both colors but I prewrite all of my posts at night while in bum mode.  I'll probably post it on Instagram soon which means you'll have to follow me to see it :) Or, you can cheat and just look to your left, lol.

I'm considering a monthly segment entitled "Read a Book," what do you guys think?  The only issue is that I'm not consistent but once I complete school, I really want to join a book club.  However, I am attempting to complete one book a month especially since I've bought 9 books in the past few weeks!  Any who, I want to start this new journey with Russell Simmon's new book: Success Through Stillness: Meditation Made Simple.

In Success Through Stillness, Simmons shows the connection between inner peace and outward success through interviews with other successful leaders in various industries, and how learning to be still has been instrumental in his own career. Simmons attributes his meditation practice with changing his life for the better and says that there is no “bad” way to meditate, only different forms for different people.

In this highly anticipated new book, Russell Simmons guides readers into finding greater clarity and focus, and explains how to be healthier in both mind and body. Simmons breaks down what he's learned from masters of meditation into a guide that is accessible to those unfamiliar with the practice.

I bought this book because I truly admire Russell Simmons.  Secondly, I'm still struggling with meditation and since this book describes making it "simple" I thought, why not?  Maybe if you guys read it with me I may actually finish it, lol.
