ENVY CAN BE GOOD...

When I made the decision to stop wearing artificial nails (some time in 2003 or 2004), my nails were paper thin.  After all, I had been wearing artificial nails for about two years straight!

I was so frustrated with my paper nails that I considered getting artificial again but then an angel appeared and told me to try OPI's Nail Envy.  By angel, I mean the manicurist, lol.  After a few weeks of using Nail Envy, I was good to go!

About: Nail Envy Nail Strengthener Original Formula by OPI provides maximum strengthening with hydrolyzed wheat protein and calcium for harder, stronger, natural nails! Ideal for weak, damaged nails.

How to use: Apply two coats to clean, dry nails with cuticles pushed back, followed by one coat every other day.

Source

So, Nail Envy popped into my head some time last week and when I went to Ulta to check it out, I found out there were two more of these guys: Nail Envy Nail Strengthener for Soft & Thin Nails and Nail Envy Nail Strengthener for Dry & Brittle Nails.  However, I suggest the Original because I don't know that much about these other two, lol.

Nail Envy retails for $16.95.  Yes, you read right and yes, it's worth it!  You can find Nail Envy at Ulta and other stores that sell OPI.

CONTRARY TO BEYONCE, I DID NOT WAKE UP LIKE THIS

ME!
I have hormonal acne, dark spots and oily skin, yet, I've finally found an expensive a daily beauty routine that gives me nearly perfect skin or the illusion of it, lol.

Cleansing and Oil Control

While I have several Murad products, at a minimum I would recommend Murad's Clarifying Cleanser (I buy the $9 travel size from Ulta), Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum $60, and Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15 l PA++ $39.50.  Also, I don't use a big fancy face brush, Sephora's Ultimate Dual Exfoliating Face Brush $18 has been perfect!

Murad is pricey but the concentration of its ingredients have resulted in an acne free face.  Also, a lot of my dark spots have disappeared *drops to knees to thank God*  Most times, I wash my face twice a day.  There are those few times I'm so exhausted I go straight to bed and wake up with a mountain on my face :(

Makeup

I start with MAC's Prep + Prime Skin Refined Zone $21, MAC's Prep + Prime Skin Base Visage $30 then Dermablend's Smooth Indulgence Foundation SPF 20 $32 (although I use it like a concealer).  I then add MAC's Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation $27, MAC's Blot Powder/Pressed $25 and NYX's Matte Finish $8.

MAC is the childhood best friend I can always depend on but Dermablend has the best coverage.

So, the basics total to...$269.50 (excluding taxes).  Gosh, that sounds bad when I type it out loud but it's not like you have to buy this stuff every week...

Murad products are available online, at Sephora, Ulta and Dillards.  NYX is available at Target and Ulta.  MAC is only available at MAC.  Of course, you can find some of these products other places with a simple Google search, lol.

THANK YOU DOOBOP

DooBop's Jodie & Benjamin
Pigs are flying, hell has frozen, and there is now an online shopping destination that mirrors ethnic diversity.  DOOBOP is about providing personalized solutions, superior service and expert advice to bring out the beauty in every woman.

The Approach

All of the products at DOOBOP are hand-picked just for you. Products are tested, discussed and tested some more to make sure everything offered is the best. Jodie, who’s also the creator of an upscale line of body products, knows first-hand how frustrating it is to be directed to the “ethnic” aisle in search of the right foundation or the perfect hair styling cream. And Benjamin, a French-born, former senior beauty-marketing executive, believes that all women should be able to click-to-buy in style. The result: beauty without struggle.

DOOBOP offers hair care, skin care, makeup, nail products and tutorial videos from brands that include but are not limited to Ahava, Caudalie, Comfort Zone, Leonor Greyl, PhytoSpecific, and RMS Beauty.

They even offer free shipping and 2 samples with every order!  Let me repeat, THEY OFFER FREE SHIPPING AND 2 SAMPLES WITH EVERY ORDER!  For more, visit DooBop!

One question: What the hell does DOOBOP stand for?  It's clearly an acronym, right?  Like, I can type DOOBOP but I will not say it out loud!

JUST A SMALL SALE...

SALLY HANSEN'S DOUBLE BLAH

Sally Hansen
Well...I think I'm fully recovered from my DC trip, I think.  Any who, while chatting with the NYC ladies I met during my DC trip, we got on the subject of nails.  Of course, most women have the same complaints: their nail polishes never lasts.  We discussed a few tips and then I told them how much I loved Deborah Lippmann and how Essie and OPI were great alternatives.  This is when one of the ladies said she uses Sally Hansen.  At that moment, I realized that I'd become a "brand whore" *insert screams*

Luckily, I forgot to bring my top and base coats for my toes and decided to pick up Sally Hansen's Double Duty Base & Top Coat.  So, let me just hand out this disclaimer: I prefer all-in-one nail polishes.  For example, base and top coats, shine and quick dry all in one bottle!

About: "All-in-one patented strengthening base and top coat works double time...for double protection.  As a base coat, Double Duty moisturizes and hydrates nails with Panthenol.  As a top coat, Double Duty protects with Nylon."

Source

My sort of kind of review: I'm assuming this did exactly what it advertises because there was no shine and it took forever to dry.  Also, I noticed a smudge.  I haven't had a smudged nail in a few years.  So...should you buy it?  Sure, if you're not too anal about your nails like I am.  In Sally Hansen's defense, there are a host of top and base coats you can choose from...

So...yeah...this retails between $4- $9 (depends on where you purchase it from).  Also, you can buy this any and everywhere.  Walk to your local gas station, I bet it's there.  Drugstore, grocery store, Target, Walmart, Red Lobster... *shoulder shrug*

HOW TO TRANSITION SLOWLY INTO SPRING

By Guest Blogger: Brittany Lingard of CurlsKinksFashion
  1. The first and most obvious thing is to get you a more light-weight but warm jacket. As the sprig weather trickles in it can range from the 40's to 50's but it gets very breezy.
  2. Get you a cute Umbrella when it starts to transition into spring it may rain very randomly but not as often as it would in the spring.
  3. Get ready to play with some stretched out styles. This weather is perfect to maintain a twist-out, braid-out or any stretched style of your liking.
  4. With that being said, make sure to keep those tresses moisturized. Use your favorite sealant & water.
  5. Get you some nice kicks, (trust me sneakers are coming in style this spring). A post is coming on that soon
  6. Also don't be afraid of flats (only in 50 degree weather). Go and get you some flats.

White Button Down- Honestly WTF
The Paleo Diet is as Bad For You as Smoking: Study- StyleCaster

Side note: Cleansing wipes are good, cleansing wipes aren't good.  You should try the Paleo Diet, don't try the Paleo Diet.  This is why we have to take things with a grain of salt!

A SHELLAC STORY

A bad photo of my nails :)
After last year's rant regarding a sucky nail salon I went to (I did not link it because I had a serious bitch fit), you would think I would never ever visit another salon!  In my defense, it was my high school reunion :(

Any who, I have visited nail salons since then but for manis and pedis.  I typically polish my own nails.  Yes, that is weird but it lasts longer when I polish vs. the three-day maximum I get from them but I digress.

This past Sunday, I went to a salon specifically for Shellac.  I'm leaving for DC Thursday for a conference to accept my fellowship and present my subject-matter paper *insert applause here* and I will be there until Tuesday. I just really didn't feel like polishing my nails or bringing a backup kit if I get a chip.

What's Shellac?  Shellac is the brand name for a new, patent pending nail product created by Creative Nail Design. It is a hybrid, meaning half nail polish, half gel.  The product is thin and strong enough to be applied similarly to nail polish, but it is cured in a way that gives it great flexibility and durability. It also has the incredible shine associated only with gel nails.  Shellac is for people who want to maintain natural nails. The formulation looks as good from day 1 to day 14, but does not appear to damage nail beds.

Source

So I just want to take this time to call out CND.  I usually copy and paste from the source but I was unable to.  This is kind of free advertising but whatever, go ahead and lock up your system with your bad selves!

Shellac cost me 25 bucks.  Not a manicure and Shellac, just the polish!  I also wasn't too thrilled about the heifer manicurist clipping my nails. I've had fun growing out my nails and she clipped a half inch off!!!  I suppose they are more manageable now *rolls eyes*  Then, she proceeded to file them square when my nails are clearly almond shaped!  Now, I'm not trying to shade you square nails but it's not 99' and it always feels a bit unnatural to me *whispers sorry*

This is actually my second time getting Shellac nails but I don't plan on making a habit of it.  One: I don't want to spend the money for it.  Two: I like to polish my nails and it's going to be tough keeping this color for 14 days :(

Oh yeah, visit Shellac, here!

Why Can't a Smart Woman Love Fashion?

"After years of dressing down to make the right impression, novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie wises up to a truth that her Nigerian mother has known all along."  Read here!

Soap Box: I've been "advised" multiple times to change the way I dress to receive respect.  I don't know why it's so hard for people to understand that I dress for ME because I LOVE CLOTHES but I digress... Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie does a great job of explaining it.

THE WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHY & WHEN OF SISTERLOCKS

SIDE ANGLE OF MY BUN
Who? Me Silly!!!

What? Sisterlocks are a natural hair management system that allows women with tightly textured hair to take advantage of a wide range of today's hairstyles without having to alter the natural texture of their hair.

Where?  According to Sisterlocks, there are consultants and trainees in over 35 states, AND several overseas countries: Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, England, France, Germany, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan, The Netherlands, Norway, St. Lucia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland and the Virgin Islands; however, I traveled to New Orleans (less than 3 hours from Jackson) because it's where my salon (Afro Swank) and stylist is located.  She also travels (but we'll chat about that at a later date).

Why?  Finally, to the most important question!!!  I was super board with my look.  Plus, my hair was acting a little crazy.  I called my mom (HEY JILL) and told her I wanted to cut my hair and she told me to call our stylist.  I thought this would be a good alternative because their different and small enough for me to have styling options.

When?  February 23rd!

Other important things you should know:  The first locking process is super expensive, however, the prices vary (based on your consultant and location).  Secondly, this took approximately 19 hours split between two days.  Yes, I sat in one spot for 19 hours (which is not unusual for those of you who wear braids).  Thirdly, you'll have to give up all your cool hair products for Sisterlock's products which helps hair through the locking process, promotes growth, provides you with essential oils, yada, yada, yada.  Also, you have to band your hair in sections when washing (to prevent unlocking).  Lastly, the locking process removed a few inches from the length of my hair but so what...

On a bright note, I can style my hair however I want and even add heat (although I'm waiting so I don't hinder the locking process).  For more info, visit Sisterlocks

Any questions???

YES, ITS ANOTHER SOAP POST: PACIFICA ISLAND VANILLA NATURAL SOAP

Yes, I buy a lot of soap!  I shower daily, sometimes twice a day, sue me!  Lol.  Any who, I was shopping at Fresh Market this past Sunday and I was actually looking for more COFFEE-ALMOND ZUM BAR but than the Pacifica box caught my eye.  I actually have this perfume so I thought it would be cool to try out the soap.

First, "all Pacifica products are gluten-free, 100% vegan, and cruelty-free."

About Island Vanilla Natural Soap:

"Moisturizing, rich-lathering, sulfate-free and bio-degradable, Pacifica Natural Soaps are handmade soaps with a proprietary vegetable-glycerin base, herbs and Pacifica's signature perfume blends with essential and natural oils."

My sort of kind of product review:

It does what any soap does, lather and rinses :) However, I was a little taken aback by how dark the soap is but that's no biggie.

This soap retails for 6 bucks and some change and can be purchased at Pacifica, natural food stores and other stores per Google :)

About Argan Oil (or you can just go ahead skip to "Giveaway Details")

Argan oil contains exceptionally, high levels of essential fatty acids, including linoleic acid (omega-6), which protect and repair the hair. These fatty acids also stimulate intracellular oxygenation, helping to restore the vital balance of water and fats in your hair.

The very high level of vitamin E have moisturizing and healing properties and is one of the most biological, antioxidants in neutralizing free radicals. It is ideal for regenerating and nourishing, dry hair.

Argan oil is pressed from the fruits of the Argan tree (Argania Spinosa) that is native to Morocco and known to live up to 200 years. For centuries, Moroccans have used Argan oil in skin care and within their nutritious diet.

Argan oil remains one of the rarest oils in the world. A very labor-intensive process, performed primarily by Moroccan women, is required to shell and crush the fruits prior to pressing the oil. A QUICK TRIP TO MULBERRY DREAMS

Mulberry Dreams
A few weeks ago, I noticed a new store in Fondren (the cool and artsy part of Jackson) and vowed to head back.  Saturday, I got a chance to briefly walk through the store and chat with the owner's mom.
Read more about the store and its owner here:  Model Ainsworth Opening Mulberry Dreams

I really wish I would've had the opportunity to snap some photos but my boyfriend was hungry so I was in a rush, lol.

Any who, the first items that caught my eye were the shoes.  They were really cute and I'll probably go back for a pair.  The one's I picked up retailed for 90 something bucks.  Now before you have a heart attack, this is a great price for boutique shoes but I digress.

Of course, there's jewelry and clothing.  The vibe is very much laidback, comfortable with a dash of bohemian chic.

And, for you guys not located in the Jackson-metropolitan area (and the ones who will probably never travel to the Jackson-metro area), MD (can I call it this?) has something called social shopping:
