Tracee Ellis Ross
Hey guys, this past weekend I traveled to New Orleans to make a somewhat drastic hair change...I now have sister locks (but we'll chat about that at a later date).  A week prior, I called my hair stylist frustrated with my hair.  I wanted a new look, less maintenance but healthier hair.

I could tell for a while now that my hair has been off.  Probably since September.  As a result, I turned to a faux milk braid and hats as my go to styles.  I hadn't been to my stylist for almost a year and haven't found a new one in Jackson.  Why?  Because I take my hair too seriously and I still feel like the natural hair scene is fairly new here.  Also, I don't want to waste a day and a half in a hair salon from unprofessional stylists who double book but I digress.

While I was getting my sister locks installed, my hair stylist told me two surprising facts: cowashing and deep conditioning too frequently can damage your hair!  Hair needs to be cleaned and deep conditioning too much can weaken hair.  After being natural for several years, I never knew this.  Had I actually been damaging my hair (which is probably why I sensed it was a little off).  According to my stylist, I had a little breakage and split ends which makes me question if we're capable of properly caring for our hair...

Sure, some people are good at caring for their hair but I think most of us may need to check in with a stylist every now and then.  I plan to visit mines every few months from now on.  Your thoughts???

Monochromatic, Natural Remedies for Getting Rid of Scars & Drugstore Makeup Brushes

Monday, February 24, 2014

I started to do separate posts but I bought too many products to do that.  Last week, we chatted a little about MAC'S POWERPOINT EYE PENCIL but I also bought:

Mineralize Skin Finish

A luxurious velvet-soft powder with high-frost metallic finish. Smoothes on: adds buffed-up highlights to cheeks, or an overall ultra-deluxe polish to the face.  Retails for 30 bucks.

Prep + Prime Skin Refined Zone

A light, oil-free emulsion that helps cloak visible pores while controlling oil and shine. Applies "wet" for a gentle micro-exfoliation: dries instantly to create an invisible, long-lasting natural matte finish. Ideal for the T-zone.  Retails for 21 bucks.

Prep + Prime Skin Base Visage

An ultra-fluid lotion formulated with special-effect silicones. Calms and soothes the skin, blots away excess oil, and evens out skin redness. Improves the laydown and application of foundation or powder.  Retails for 30 bucks.

Blot Powder/Pressed

A unique pressed powder designed primarily to provide shine control without adding any noticeable colour or texture. Sets foundation, finishes faces. For use in professional situations and for frequent touch-ups. Blot Powder contains Mica and Silica to absorb excess oils and reduce shine on the skin's surface.  Retails for 25 bucks.

Lipstick (in Mocha)

Colour plus texture for the lips. Stands out on the runway. Simmers on the street!  Retails for 19 bucks but I got it for free because I turned in my 6 recyclables.

If you're thinking I used my whole paycheck to purchase this stuff, you're right, lol.  With the new gig, I'm on the run a lot and I NEED long wearing makeup because I may not have time to touch up in between meetings.  Hopefully, I'll be able to do a review on each but don't hold me to it...y'all know I'm a flake.

3 Strand Twist, Eye Shadow Class & Missoni

This past weekend, I went to MAC to buy a few beauty products and a eye marker was one of them.  But when I got home, I realized that the beauty consultant or whatever MAC calls them gave me the wrong product: Powerpoint Eye Pencil.

First off, I knew I was not going back (don't nobody got time for that).  And because I never tried it before, I figured I would use it so I can tell you guys about it.

About: Waterproof. Longwearing. Metallic, shimmer and matte finishes. Smooth to apply. Won't transfer, smudge, or budge... Draws the line: powers your eyes. Makes its point. Lasts.

Sort of kind of review: Surprisingly, I like this.  It glides on and just like the description says, its long lasting and doesn't smudge.  Because it's a pencil, I don't have to worry about it drying out are wearing out on a certain side.  I may consider getting other pencils but I still have about five colors from an Urban Decay set my mommy bought me.

Powepoint retails for 16 bucks and is def worth a try...if you feel like it :) Shop here!

    Zum Bar Soap
I sure do blow through soap, don't I?  Well at least you know I'm clean!  Any who, I bought this soap last week from Whole Foods Market for no particular reason but the word "coffee" did pop out at me....

About: Almond has a brother in hearty, robust coffee - itÍs grounds for a double tall Zumacino. Exfoliation helps you renew yourself when you denude yourself.
  • Sort of kind of review: I love this but I love Zum bars in general.  I love the way the bars lather and it always smell so good.  Now the description says it smells like coffee-almond but let's just go with almond...

WARNING: There are little coffee grounds on the soap but don't be alarmed, it helps with exfoliation.

This bar of soap retails for 5 bucks and some change and is available at Indigo Wild (Zum's owners), Whole Food, Amazon and other organic grocery stores I don't feel like Googling :)

Can I just take one second to bitch about Blogger.  Yesterday, I spent a substantial amount of time trying to post and I kept receiving error messages!!! Any who, I hope you guys had an awesome 3-day weekend!

So, I've been eyeballing this baby for a while...mostly, because of the price, lol.  On the other hand, I haven't had a facial in almost a year and this is the mask they used at my former place.  Also, I've been so disrespectful to my face so I had to choose between booking a facial or buying this.

About Murad Clarifying Mask: Part of any complete acne treatment system is a mask treatment to give you that extra boost of clarifying action for perfect skin. Murad Clarifying Mask uses rare earth clays to draw out impurities. This means that there will be less bacteria in your pores to cause acne breakouts and flare ups. Sulfur then directly treats your acne and reduces its severity immediately. As part of any skin care routine, the use of a mask treatment on a regular basis allows you to treat problems deep beneath the skin while also giving yourself a bit of luxury. Get rid of acne and improve your skin’s overall appearance with a mask treatment. You’ll find that you’ll have beautiful skin for days.

My sort of kind of review: (this is starting to be a thing, isn't it?  Like, I don't want to take full responsibility for anything, lol).  Because I use Murad products, I knew it would work well.  The two little bumps I had minimized overnight so I'm pretty pleased...

Murad's Clarifying Mask retails for a whopping $37 bucks (please don't roll your eyes at me), however, it's cheaper than a facial and will last for a while (I plan on using mine once or twice a week).  You can purchase it at Murad, here or Sephora, Ulta, Dillards and the other usual suspects.

Lip Tar
At this point, you probably think that Lip Tar has hired me as one of their consultants, lol.  Most recently, I talked about this brand in "I'm Blue" and "Lip Tar" but the purpose of this post is to provide you with a brief review of the product.

First, I though the little brush that comes with the gloss was cool but highly unnecessary but after applying it, I knew why.  You could get this stuff all over you and its kind of hard to get off which brings me to a very important point...  THIS IS THE LONGEST WEARING LIPSTICK I'VE EVER WORN!!!

*eats and drinks all day* Lip Tar still there
*goes out to dinner with friends* Lip Tar still there
*goes to sleep from long day and doesn't wash face (the horrors) and wakes up* Lip Tar still there

So, although it's quite expensive (18 bucks) it's worth it and is now the official Pink Gumbeaux lip brand *insert fireworks*

Disclaimer: I'm a flake and will probably say the very same words about another brand next month!

Happy Valentine's Day

Milani Spring 2014, Nick Fouquet & Charcoal as a Beauty Ingredient

Monday, February 10, 2014

So...I just wanted to inform you guys of some good news!!!  I got a super duper promotion (effective today) which means there are a host of things that will have to change.

First, I still don't know what I'm going to do with Pink Gumbeaux (the store).  I haven't restocked in a while, I want to work with a new company (but have no time to find one), and our department of revenue has moved to an electronic system that has been pure hell for me!!!  I'm giving myself a couple of months to make a decision....

Secondly, I need to make more of an effort to write blog posts and outline ideas in advance.  I literally worked 10 + hours today but knew I had to let you guys know why I may not always be around...

Thirdly, gone are the days of me bitterly posting, lol.  I think I just got the career I desired so I just wanted to let you guys know that when people say "anything is possible," it's true.  Just consider this: I'm a 28-year old black woman, from a lower middle class background, who happened to reach a doctoral level of education (even though I was a shitty student most of my life), and has now landed a high-profile position. I've always known what I was capable of these things but I was waiting on everyone else to realize this, lol.

Side note:  I bet y'all want to know what my new job is... Happy Hunting, lol.

Valentine's Day Gifts for Guys, 3 No Heat Hairstyles & Eyeglass Street Style

I've been obsessed with blue lipstick for a while! I mean, how many more reds, pinks, and oranges could the beauty industry produce?  We needed something new!  Thing is, I've been on the hunt for this since the summer.  While I do appreciate online shopping, my preference is I WANT IT IN MY HANDS NOW!!! *insert thunder and lightening*  Most recently, I spotted a blue lip at Niks Cosmetics but I bought Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetic Lip Tar - Matte in true cyan blue from Sephora this past Saturday (because I happen to be picking up a gift for my mom's birthday).

Side note: Niks is cheaper...  Any who, I wanted to post some pictures so I could get you comfortable with the idea of blue lips (if you aren't).

Orphee Nou
Sophie Dreijer
So where does one wear blue lipstick???  I tell you where you don't wear it: work, school, church, weddings, baptisms, job interviews, christenings, yoga, when meeting his parents, brunch, while shopping at Walmart, etc. but hey, you're what you want! Lol.

Side note 2: let's wish my mom a giant HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Valentine's Day... The holiday we hate to love.  Nowadays, it's not all about women.  As a woman, you can get your boyfriend, husband, father, brother, etc. gifts too.  Shouldn't we show them how much we love and appreciate them?  Men need that too.  Below, is a list of gifts I intend on getting the men in my life!

  1. Not a damn thing, this holiday is for women!

Happy Hunting ladies :)

  • Glazed pearls + a shea butter glide provide blendable, natural color and smooth, even application.
  • Fragrance Free. Non-comedogenic. Suitable for all skin types.
For Best Results
Glide over cheekbones towards the temple. Blend with fingertips and build for desired color impact.

Expert Tip: Rushed for time? Master Glaze can also be used on eyes or lips for a sheer color glaze wherever you need it.

Sort of Kind of Review:

You guys should know by now that I don't like to take full responsibility for anything, lol.  Any who, one of my major concerns with most cosmetic companies is "if the color is going to show on my skin tone."  The answer: yes!  I tired this with and without my foundation and it looks awesome.  I'm starting to wonder if it's going to give my MAC and Smashbox blushes a run for their money, especially, since it's only 8 bucks and some change compared to the 30 and 20 something I pay for my usual products.  The only thing I don't know yet is if this product lasts.  The description doesn't say that it lasts and while I put on 3 different products to prevent my oily skin from breaking through, only time will tell (this is my first full day wearing it).

I may need to do a follow-up post later this week.  I guess I should attach a photo but I'm too lazy and busy for a photo shoot, lol.  Any who, this product comes in 6 shades: Just-Pinched Pink, Pink Fever, In Coral Sheen, Warm Nude, Make A Mauve (which I bought and is pictured above) and Plums Up.

I'm thinking about heading back to buy the Pink Fever and In Coral Sheen.  Any who, master glaze retails for 8 bucks and some change (but varies by store).  You can find it at your local drugstore, Ulta, Target, Walmart, etc.  Read a few reviews, here!
