TOP 8 QUESTIONS ASKED ABOUT MY SISTERLOCKS -_-

Hey everyone, I hope you're having a great holiday season.  I usually tell you guys I'm on vacay but just kind of disappeared for a week...lol. You guys are a smart group, I knew you would figure it out.

On yesterday, my mom and me were having a grand ole time laughing at the comments and questions we get about our Sisterlocks.  Although Sisterlocks are over twenty years old, it appears to be one of the newest wonders of the world or south or maybe just our immediate environments, lol.  Without further ado, here's the list!

  1. What are those?  Are they braids?  The weaving technique gives the appearance of braids but they're just tiny locks.
  2. Why are they so small?  In addition to the weaving technique and parting grid, there should be at least 400 locks for them to be considered Sisterlocks.
  3. *Funky expression on their face* ARE YOU GOING TO LET YOUR HAIR LOCK? Of course not, I got 1 million baby locks installed for the holidays -_-
  4. How long did it take? Me: "20 hrs." Inquirer: *falls out, rolls down street, catches breath* "I couldn't sit there that long."
  5. How much did they cost?  Me: *says price that is very uncomfortable to inquirer* Inquirer: *faints*  For some, the upfront cost may be a lot.  For my wigs and weavers, not so much.  It's definitely an investment but considering I haven't put much effort into my hair over the last week and used zero products, I think it was worth it.
  6. Do you ever do anything else to them?  Do you ever style them?  Yeah so I'm not doing much of that *shoulder shrug*
  7. Can they be taken out?  Yes, but why would I?  Factor in the amount of time it took and costs of installation and relocking and you'll know these are going to be with me forever.
  8. Is that all of your hair???  Although faux locks are a new trend, Sisterlocks requires the use of your real hair.
BONUS: I could never get my hair done like that... Um...yeah, I didn't ask if you could...lol.

Remember when your elementary teacher told you there was no such thing as a stupid comment or question???  Well, she lied :)  Just kidding, I'm here to educate you *gives death stare*

HEALTH MATE BY WITHINGS

Welp, its that time of the year where we make health plans for the new year while simultaneously indulging in the fatty goodness holiday food has to offer *insert smiley face here* Any who, while bored and searching for apps to take up space on my phone, I came across Health Mate by Withings.

This app allows you to manage your weight and visualize your progress, forces you to be more active (this thing wants me to take 10,000 steps a day), measure your heart rate (which can be done through your camera phone), and obtain better sleep (using Withing Pulse's sleep cycle analysis)....whew.

This app is FREE and available to iTunes and Android users.

Side note: Withings has way more to offer than Health Mate, "Withings creates smart products and apps to take care of yourself and your loved ones in a new and easy way."  Products include but are not limited to smart scales, active trackers, baby products, sleep products, home environment, heart products, etc.  For more, visit Withings.

TITI BRANCH, CO-FOUNDER OF MISS JESSIE'S DIES

When I logged into Facebook, there were reports from magazines and blogs that Titi Branch, co-founder of Miss Jessie's passed at the age of 45 from an apparent suicide; however, it has not been confirmed.

Miss Jessie's was the first product I used when I went natural.  I used to order their products from a salon out of Atlanta but now it's available nearly everywhere.  The thing I liked most about their products versus any other line, there is a product available for all hair textures and let's not forget their bogo sale around the holidays.

It's clear that Titi had some issues which may be why her and her sister separated for a brief period a few years back.  Any who, this is such a big loss to the natural hair community and I'll be praying for both Titi and the family and friends she left behind.

ASHLEE'S GUIDE TO WEDDING PLANNING (FOR BROKE PEOPLE) PT. 1

In the event you don't know, I'm engaged!  *insert applause here*  But the high of being engaged was brief.  Next came the flood of calls about wedding dates, colors and venues (as if I have been planning my wedding my whole life).  I really didn't want to have a wedding but my groomzilla did.  He's a bit more family oriented than I am...  Any who, I've come up with a list of shortcuts for the couples who aren't trying to go broke planning a wedding.

Step 1: Outline a budget.
A lot of people will tell you to set a budget first but I disagree.  How can you set a budget when you don't know how much anything costs?  Get quotes first, determine what you need and then set your budget.  One thing me and the fiancé thought was unnecessary was engagement pictures...we'll focus our finances on wedding photos.  Another thing I really wanted was a website where everyone could RSVP and see what's on our registry but we concluded that there are a host of people who aren't tech savvy so it may be a waste to pay monthly fees for a site...but I still kind of want it , lol.

Step 2: Buy Save-the-Dates and wedding invitations in bulk.  Try sites such as Zazzle where there are tons and tons of awesome designs.  Also, the more you buy, the cheaper the price.

Step 3: Photos, flowers and wedding cakes, oh my!  Get quotes from your local photographers, florists, and bakeries.  Although, neighborhood grocery stores may offer cheaper prices.  And guess what, Walmart now makes wedding cakes, however, my mom said mine won't be coming from there, lol.  I don't care where it comes from since she's paying for it *insert wink and gun*

2015 COLOR OF THE YEAR

Source: Pantone
Pantone has released it's color for 2015, Marsala!  I'm sure you're thinking, who's Pantone?  "Pantone LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of X-Rite, Incorporated, is the world-renowned authority on color and provider of color systems and leading technology for the selection and accurate communication of color across a variety of industries. The PANTONE® name is known worldwide as the standard language for color communication from designer to manufacturer to retailer to customer."

Every year they release a Color of the Year is released by Pantone which results in all your favorite beauty and apparel brands rushing to produce products in this color so you can buy it.  Any who, I like the color.  It looks like burgundy with a splash of brown but I digress, lol.  So, in the event you see this color front row and center at your local Sephora and favorite clothing store, you know why.  You've been warned.

AMERICAN APPAREL LANDS A DIVA FOR THEIR NEWEST AD

Source: American Apparel

American Apparel has signed a new model and it's none other than viral sensation, Brendan Jordan.
In the event you don't know Brendan aka diva dancer, he was captured in a  video by a local Las Vegas news station filming a crowd for a grand opening, I think.  Any who, he was in the background dancing, posing and giving us face like a true diva.  In addition to his new celebrity status and modeling gig, he is an advocate for the LGBT community; specifically, LGBT youth.  Seems like a no brainer to select him for their campaign.  It will definitely introduce a new generation of tweens and teens to American Apparel (who haven't been doing so hot in sales).  According to the word on the street of course...

Side note: Check out Brendan's YouTube Channel, I love it!

WONDER LIP PAINT BY J. CAT BEAUTY

While on one of many unnecessary trips to Ulta, I walked up and down each aisle checking out new products to blog about and walked upon the Wonder Lip Paint display.  The reason why I choose to blog about this is because it's on the cheap side of Ulta.  Some of you know what I'm talking about...  Ulta has the expensive side where you can't use any of your discounts and coupons and the cheap side where you can use your coupons but it's not really necessary because everything is already dirt cheap... #thanksbutnothanks

Description:

"For invincible color and impeccable wear, the Wonder Lip Paint serves justice! With the twofold blend of endurance and delivery of intense pigmentation, this will become your heroin of lip colors. Select from numerous colors to paint your lips for your day and nighttime adventures."

In addition, to Wonder Lip Paint, J. Cat Beauty includes other beauty favorites such as eyelashes and eyelash glue, eye shadow, eyeliner, lip gloss, lip pencil, blush, bronzer, nail polish, nail art strips, hair chalk, and beauty tools...whew!

With Wonder Lip Paint retailing for only $4.99, I'm pretty sure it'll give my favorite brand (Lip Tar) a run for their money.  For more info on Wonder Lip and J. Cat Beauty products, click here!

YEAH, I DID IT! I DYED MY SISTERLOCKS!!!

My Sisterlocks
As some of you guys know, I got Sisterlocks in February.  Shortly after, I found out that I wouldn't be able to dye my hair until my hair locked and I thought no biggie...  9 months later, I still haven't locked. It appears that I have a few different textures that range from waves to tight little coils. Most naturals would be thrilled but in this case, it's not helpful... Even worse, I am naturally gray. I've been this way since a teen but most people didn't know until I stopped dying my hair.  This is no over exaggeration, I am very gray from the root to the tip throughout maybe 30% of my hair!

After discussing this matter with both my Sisterlocks Consultants, they agreed that my hair was locked enough to take the risk.  I have a few in the back that are fully locked while the others are locked (at the top) as a result of the locking process.  So, once I got back in town Sunday afternoon, I headed straight to Sally's Beauty Supply to pick up my favorite and only home dye I've ever used: Ion Color Brilliance Permanent Creme Hair Color.

Of course, you'll need the basics: gloves, plastic hair cap, dye brush, mixing bowl, and Ion's Color Defense After-Color Sealer.  After mixing dye contents, I applied the dye in sections of four than bonded (which is what us Sisterlockers have to do when washing our hair).  Then, I placed the plastic cap over my head and watched TV, lol.  After about 45 mins, while in the shower, I washed my hair while bonded but then pulled them out to give my hair a good rinse and apply the color sealer.  I rinsed the conditioner under cool water and tadah!

So why is this such a big deal?  As I stated previously, I was supposed to wait but how long was that wait going to be?  Two more months?  Two more years or twenty?! Lol.  Secondly, dyeing hair is drying and I'm not supposed to use moisturizing products until I'm locked.  Grrrrr.   But, I dyed my hair black so it shouldn't be too damaging or damage my hair at all.  Last but not least, all of the water and product has my hair uber curly and will definitely contribute to my hair not locking anytime soon but guess what...YOLO.

Side note: I'm working with major hair body *insert Willow Smith's Whip My Hair*

NASTY GAL OPENS FLAGSHIP... NOWHERE NEAR ME

Source: Nasty Gal

Nasty Gal opens flagship and it's no where near me, lol.  But, I guess this isn't about me -_-  Any who, on November 21st, Nasty Gal opened it's very first store in Los Angeles.  Lucky patrons lined up down the street to be the first to shop the 2,500-square-foot store filled with vintage and new fashion-forward threads and accessories.  The opening appeared to be quite the festive event with music, food and shopping...duh.

I just have such a girl crush on Sophia Amoruso, her store and book #GIRLBOSS.  Sophia, do you need an intern?

MISTY COPELAND LANDS REALITY TV SHOW

Source: Teen Vogue
Every time I hear about another celebrity or entertainer getting a reality show, I get irritated.  However, I end up watching...lol.  Any who, Misty Copeland getting a reality show is totally unexpected but welcomed!

The Misty Copeland Project will air on Oxygen and follow the lives of up-and-coming ballet dancers in New York with the assistance of Misty (I can call her that because we're friends...in my head).

No word yet when this will air but I'll keep you posted.  Make sure you do the same for me since the Oxygen channel doesn't air out here.  Screw you Xfinity!

YES TO TOMATOES BLEMISH CLEARING FACIAL WIPES

"Yes To" products are nothing new to me but it was my first time trying a Yes to Tomatoes product and because I ran out of makeup wipes and this was on sale, I thought I'd try it out.

Product description: "Yes to Tomatoes Blemish Clearing Facial Wipes help fight acne and blemishes when you're on the go with powerful blemish-fighting ingredients that are proven to help heal and clear skin. Salicylic Acid helps unclog pores, break down blemishes, and control oil. Tomatoes help control sebum and oil production in skin, while protecting it from environmental agents that can cause breakouts."

Source

At the time I bought this from Ulta (last Thursday), it was on sale for $4.99 which was ultimately the reason I bought it, lol.  However, I do like these wipes.  I use both sides of the wipes to remove makeup which leaves the surface of my face pretty clear, however, I do follow up with an exfoliator.  Under no circumstances can this be considered as face washing...at least for me.

Any who...for more info, visit Yes To.

WHO KNEW? KISS'S LIP LACQUER

I have to be honest, I'm sometimes bougie.  I frequently visit department stores, Ulta and Sephora for the latest beauty trends and rarely pay attention to what dollar and beauty stores have anymore.  My biggest problem is they aren't pigmented but I was wrong this time...

Once again, my coworker put me on.  She said she found these in a beauty store located in the "trap."

Translation: the hood

Any who, they were a few dollars a piece so she bought a few thinking they could be used to add shine to her lipstick but quickly found out they were highly pigmented.  When she returned from lunch, she did a few swaps on my hand and I was like "OH. MY. GOSH, I need these, where can I buy them?"

Lip Lacquer comes in 12 colors and is available at random beauty stores and Amazon, lol.  For more information, visit Kiss.

SORT OF KIND OF REVIEW | ESTEE LAUDER'S DOUBLE WEAR

Double Wear in Sandalwood
So...my coworker who also happens to be a makeup artist thought my current foundation (Dermablend) was too dark for me.  I've been wanting to branch out and try other foundations but it's a very traumatic experience for me...lol.  Any who, we made our way to the Estee Lauder counter during our lunch break where she gave me a sample of the color Sandalwood.  I thought Sandalwood was too light but she stated that my oily skin would darken it after application.  Any who, here are the product details:

15-hour staying power. Flawless all day. This worry-free, long-wearing makeup stays fresh and looks natural through heat, humidity, nonstop activity.  Won't change color, smudge or come off on clothes. Feels lightweight and comfortable.  Now the flawless look you see in the morning is the look you keep all day.

 Source

So...I like the feel of the foundation, it does produce a flawless look and it's a bit matte.  In contrast, it's so thin that my oily skin breaks through it after a few hours. Grrrrr.  Please keepp in mind that I use three mattifying products before I apply foundation.  Verdict: I'm going to pass on this one but I would definitely recommend it for people who aren't as oily.  Double Wear retails for 37 bucks and is available at Estee Lauder, duh.

ADDICTED TO DEBORAH | DL'S ADDICTED TO SPEED TOP COAT

I am really surprised that I haven't tried nor blogged about this product.  You guys know how I feel about queen Deborah Lippmann and all of her nail polish glory so here goes...

Product Information: "You’re out the door—in a flash. This high-shine top coat dries fast so you can go about your business without a smear, smudge or scratch.  Addicted to Speed does not contain formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene, dbp (dibutyl phthlate), or camphor, and is not tested on animals."

Sort of kind of review:  I am biased so don't ask me...lol.  Of course it dried fast.  I know this because I bumped my nails a few times immediately after I polished them.  As for shine, I can't comment on that.  I'm wearing lavender that looks more like a white so I'll have to test the shiny theory later.
Last but not least, this retails for 20 bucks.  Yes, you read right.  I value really good base and top coats because it gives me the opportunity to wear cheap ass nail colors but have a lasting manicure :)

Find this product at your local Sephora, Deborah Lippmann, Nordstrom, and other places that sell expensive beauty products, lol.

MATCHMAKER ANA | THE ANA LORIAN AGENCY

A while back, I read an article in a local newspaper about Ana and shortly after, we became Facebook friends.  Her posts are always inspirational, informative and downright hilarious.

Ana Lorian is the founder and CEO of the Ana Lorian Agency, a matchmaking and dating coach service and Mississippi's only professional matchmaker with an 88% success rate.

“In today’s world, finding someone to have a lasting, great relationship with is harder than it has ever been.  Most singles waste precious time and energy on people who just aren’t a good fit for them,” Ana believes.  “This does not have to be.  Her step-by-step system helps you get real about yourself, your ideal partner, and your future so you don’t waste time and energy (and money) dating the wrong people.”

LOOKING FLY ON A DIME: HOW TO FIND FABULOUS FASHION AT ANY THRIFT SHOP & MAKE THE CHEAP LOOK CHIC

So... I can't recall how I found about this but that doesn't matter...lol.

Designer dresses for less than $1? A bag full of clothing for 25 bucks? These are just some of the deals you can find at a thrift shop. While secondhand stores have amazing deals and steals, there's a serious intimidation factor associated with them. Exactly how do you thrift shop and do so without losing your patience?

Looking Fly on a Dime breaks down the best tips and tricks to land major thrift store scores.

The book helps you:
  • Prepare before your visit: how to find a prime shop, the best days to visit and what you should wear (trust me, your thrifting outfit is important).
  • Strategize while you shop: what section of the store you should attack first, how to find unique treasures in a sea of clothing and ways to determine if an item is worth buying.
  • Sanitize and style: easy solutions to clean your new-to-you clothing and pro styling tips to create a standout style that looks like a million bucks.
After reading Looking Fly on a Dime, you'll realize thrift shopping is easier than you think. Your closet and your wallet will thank you.

Although I have not cracked the book open yet, it was only $2.99 via Amazon so what could I possibly have to loose?  I mean...that's cheaper than a magazine.  If you've read it and used some of the tips, let me know.

Side note: This would make a great stocking stuffer... You're welcome :)
