Thrift Shopping (in Pictures)

So, last week in Wadrobe Change I mentioned that I was going to shop at two of my favorite thrift/cosignment stores to kick off my wadrobe change, here's a look...

Orange Peel

I got this cool hat for 10 bucks (and 20% off)!

And then there's Fondren Muse which sales high end clothing, shoes and accessories (the prices are high end too)! Lol.

The art of a financially-responsible splurge

"You're itching for a shiny new car. A beach vacation is just what you need to combat an all-too-stressful past few months. A high-power blender would make it so much easier to eat healthy. And you can have them! Here's how to get what's important to you without destroying your budget or going into debt."  For more, read here!

10 wardrobe staples you didn't know you needed

"Hey, I’m all for the classics. But there’s only so many black trousers and white oxfords a person needs before it’s time to expand. In the slideshow below, I’ve found 10 easy-to-wear pieces worth adding to the rotation. I wouldn’t call them basics, but each one’s totally timeless."  For more, read here!

Yesterday I was at Ulta when someone pointed out the wall of sale items.  I grabbed Mizani's Defyne Wax (regular price $17.99, sale price 4 bucks)!

"Our strongest hold yet…with shine. Defyne Wax is velvety white pomade that delivers high definition and hold with a clean, non-greasy shine. Mold, sculpt, add detail and re-shape over and over again. This mineral oil and petrolatum free formula with sunflower seed and castor oil add softness and shine while natural beeswax and candelilla wax deliver pliable hold without drying out the hair."

The Review (sorta, kind of):

So, I guess I should give a disclaimer: I used this product on blown out hair (not sure if that makes a difference or not).  Any who, this is def a wax...  I had to kind of dig in it to get some out.  I than twisted my hair and added about 6 flexi rods.

This morning, I took them down and my hair looked quite blah... However, it's important to note that if this product is marked down the way it was, it may be old.  Who knows...

So, I don't know if I would recommend it.  Next time, I'm going to try it on wet hair (when my curls are more defined) and see if that makes a difference.  You can shop Mizani at Ulta, Target, Beauty Stores, JCPenny, etc.  I don't want to link it because you may can find it cheaper elsewhere.

Happy hunting!

Perfect Purples For Fall's Bold Beauty Look- POPSUGAR

"Fall trends are often darker and more moody than the Summer trends they follow, as we move away from bronzed skin and neon brights to make way for smokier looks and jewel tones. Purple is always a popular choice, but it can be one of the trickiest makeup colors to get right. The wrong shade applied in the wrong place can make you look bruised or ill, and olive-skinned beauties in particular may need to test a few products to find the right shade. But get those color combos correct, and purple can really lift your look."  For more, visit POPSUGAR!

Brand FYI: Pixi

So, this is another one of those situations when I stop to look at a product and wonder if I ever posted about it before... *checks posts, doesn't see it*  Any who, I was at target looking for stuff to buy that I didn't need when I passed through their makeup section and noticed that Pixi now has one of those big lip crayons.  But, let's rewind and start from the beginning....
Created over 10 years ago and launched in our flagship boutique in Soho, London, Pixi has a loyal worldwide following thanks to its pure, awakening & skin-loving products that create a naturally radiant "just had a good night's sleep" look.

Creator Petra Strand has 20+ years experience as a makeup artist & product developer and real-world experience as a busy working mother of two. Pixi is truly about multitasking, flaw-fixing, youth-enhancing products for women on-the-go with no time to spare.

Passionate about skincare, Petra creates innovative formulations that are infused with botanicals and beneficial ingredients so that skin is treated whilst you wear it.

So, this is one of those times when I say, "what doesn't Pixi have?"

Pixi has brushes and tools, shadow, mascara, concealer, makeup remover, pallettes, primer, tinted balm, nail polish, yada, yada, yada! Lol.

I would say the price range is pretty average or a dollar below average.  You can shop the brand at Target or Pixi (Pixi probably offers better deals).

Yep, so I am ready for a wardrobe change.  Recently, I've been inspired by Janelle Monae, men's wear, classics and adult life.

I actually would like to go a little dark and basic and leave the color up to my nails and accessories.

In my professional life, I would like to add more pants, blazers, pencil skirts and structure.

When dressing down, I would like more t-shirts (with bad words and what not, lol), skinny jeans and spikes!

I need more heels too but I'm more than good on purses, lol.

Last but not least, I need some head gear.  I want like 5 fedoras, a cat ear head band and whatever odd stuff I can find.

This wardrobe change will occur over the next few months.  I will probably pull from all of my favorite stores: ZARA, Topshop, GAP, Old Navy, Forever 21, H&M and Urban Outfitters.  However, I plan to start my search at local thrift stores: Orange Peel & Fondren Muse.

So, I bet you guys are wondering where all my old clothes are going...  I've sold a bit to consignment stores, donated some to charity and am begrudgingly giving some to my younger cousin (yes, I'm talking to you Chariece).

I may document this process, stay tuned!

The Health Benefits of Tea- Beauty High

"We have all heard the typical rumors and murmurings that tea can do wonders for your health. While we know it makes us feel better when our throat hurts or we’ve got a cough, we’re not exactly sure what it’s actually doing for us – and aside from the fact that it warms our fingers (and our insides!) we figured it was time to find out what benefits we’re really gaining from drinking all of this tea. And, if you’re not taking advantage of these brewed cups of goodness in your diets, you may want to start now."  For more, visit Beauty High!

Gather around boys and girls...we need to talk!

It's officially fall *insert fireworks* but where I'm currently located, it's still summer, lol.

So, one of my biggest pet peeves are individuals who can't wait to pull out their fall and winter clothes's not even cold yet!!!  How are you wearing knee boots and a tank top?  These things aren't working for me so I'm going to walk you through the transitioning process.

  1. Wearing white.  Wearing white after Labor Day is still a bit controversial.  Personally, I put up my white dresses, sandals and purses...  However, there is a such thing called winter white and even off white (or cream).
  2. Boots.  It is just too damn hot for knee boots.  I love them too but do you want to be fashionable and faint.  No one will pay attention to your above knee boots when your spread out on the ground, lol.  This is when booties, peep-toe booties and calf high boots come in.  I actually wear boots year around but I keep them short!
  3. Put down the leather jacket!  If you want your leather fix, try clothing with trims of leather.  Just yesterday, I wore a blazer with a leather bottom. I bought it from JCPenny for 30 something bucks and change.
  4. Keep those sweaters and scarfs light.  Hey, it's going to get a little chilly so pick something light and airy.
  5. Add a little color...  Just because it's fall doesn't mean I won't wear my neon purse.  I think it would go great with all black or grey.  What do you think?
So there you have it!  As I stated, this list is for the people who can't wait to bring out their heavy gear (meanwhile, it's 122 degrees outside), lol.

6 Times to Wear Nail Art (And 4 Times You Never Should)- Beauty High

"There may have been more than a few attempts to kill the nail art trend (Chanel, we’re looking at you). Considering the countless takes on nail designs we’ve spotted throughout Fashion Month, though, it’s safe to say that your tips will hardly be relegated to a single color any time soon. Even if you’re not the most skilled with a nail-sized paint brush, nail art has become accessible to the masses by way of nail stickers, and these days, it’s rare to meet a girl who hasn’t tried the trend at least once."  For more, visit Beauty High!

Bow Down

*insert Beyonce's "Bow Down" here*  Any who, yesterday I had the pleasure of attending Golden Glam Boutique's Fall Preview & Debut of Men's Accessories which included neckties, cuff links, handkerchiefs and bow ties!

I also had the honor owner of meeting the designer behind KnottedUPNeckwear and he taught us how to tie a bow tie!  It's going to def take some practice for me to perfect that skill, lol.  I plan on heading back some time this week to buy one for my boyfriend.

Men's accessories should be posted on Golden Glam's website very soon.  You can also call the store to place your order.  For more, visit Golden Glam Boutique!

After 6 years of being natural, I'm finally detangling (and often).  I heard about the wonders of it but it didn't really take until I knew what to use and how to use it.

Why I like it?
  • Eliminates fizz
  • Reduces breakage
  • Reduces shedding
I've been washing my hair every 4 days and I have...maybe five curls that shed each time.  Any who, let's get to the products and steps.  And, keep in mind, it's easier to do this in the shower!

Step1: Apply Crème of Nature (or a conditioner of your choice).  I use Crème of Nature conditioner as shampoo then I leave a little in.
Step 2: Drag your fingers through your hair under running water.
Step 3: Apply Olive Oil and leave in.
Step 4: Apply   Dark & Lovely's Au Naturale anti-shrinkage Curl Defining Creme Glaze.  You should also drag your fingers to ensure the product is even dispersed.

So, at this point it's up to you to let it air dry or use a diffuser.  For me, it depends on my plans for that day.  If I'm running errands or at home, I'll allow it to air dry.

Disclaimer: Because your hair will be saturated with products, it will be very white and wet.  It's up to you if you want to go out like that.  I usually role my windows down as I'm running errands and all the conditioner is absorbed in 20 minutes (but it's still wet).

Another important step, I DO NOT DRY MY HAIR WITH A TOWEL.  This is the little devil that gives you frizz.  If you have to dry, use a t-shirt instead.

Disclaimer 2: This method does not reduce shrinkage, however, you have very fresh and shiny curls.  Of course, it's up to you how you want to style you hair.  I wear mines out most of the time and twist every night with a little more Olive Oil and Taliah Waajid's Curly Curl Cream.

Side note: I have 4 A,B & C curl patterns.

Apply Mascara First, and More Backwards Makeup Tricks That Really Work

"While there’s no real wrong way to apply makeup (have fun! It comes off!), every makeup artist has his or her own method for creating the ultimate effect. Ask five pros whether they apply concealer or foundation first, and you’re bound to get five different answers. But one major makeup artist swears by switching up the order of almost every product that goes on your face, and when we first heard his tips, they kind of blew our minds. Napoleon Perdis, the Australian makeup artist whose namesake cosmetics line is sold at the likes of Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom, and whose NP Set line is a Target favorite, shared his best makeup tips with us. Prepare to be amazed."  For more, visit Daily Makeover!

SHE WANTS THAT OLD THING BACK- Neutrogena's Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask

As some of you know, I went MIA for a few days to focus on my Oral Qualifying Exam.  During that week, I probably washed my face once a day and barely got any sleep.  For the most part, I didn't wear makeup but I still needed to wash twice a day because I have super oily skin.  By Sunday, I was ready to do some reconstruction which started with finding a mask to remove as much dirt as possible.

By now, you know I'm a Murad addict but I didn't feel like driving to the mall to pick some up.  I also didn't feel like shelling out 30 bucks or more for a mask (I typically don't use masks to often).  So, while at my local Kroger, I browsed the aisles and ran across old faithful: Neutrogena's Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask.  Prior to these hormonal breakouts I have been experiencing for the last couple of years, all I used was Neutrogena products.

    About Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask:

"This dermatologist-tested formula has the acne-fighting power of Benzoyl Peroxide to kill bacteria and treat existing breakouts. Cooling intensity builds as it penetrates deep into pores. Use as a daily cleanser to kill bacteria. Or use as an intensive mask for deep cleansing and extra oil control. Clean rinsing—skin is left clean and smooth."

So, I lathered the mask on, hopped in a steamy shower (read a little about the benefits of steam, here), removed and went along with my normal wash routine.  After, my face was almost a different complexion, lol.  It was definitely clean and less irritable.

Of course, Neutrogena products can be found everywhere or you can purchase it from their site, here!  It retails for $6.99 on their site, I believe bought mines 20 cents cheaper at Kroger.  It'll probably be the cheapest at Walmart and any dollar stores that carry it.

And an honorable mention goes to Murad's Instant Radiance Eye Cream!  Last Saturday, I looked like SHIT!  My eyes were puffy and I had terrible bags (apparently, I must have been carrying my school books in them).  I added this cream Friday night, Saturday morning and night and by Sunday, I looked like my old self again :)

The ONE trend I hate from New York's Fashion Week

New York Fashion week has ended and I've been waiting a few days to blog about this irritating trend...

What's New York Fashion Week (for those who don't know)?!

"Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is New York City's single largest media event, taking place twice a year (February& September) at Lincoln Center, one of the most well known arts and cultural institutions in the world.  The event provides top designers an international platform to showcase their collections to more than 100,000 industry insiders from around the world, including buyers, editors, retailers, celebrities, VIPs, and more.  With more than 80 designers shows over 8 days, it is known as the premier event worldwide where style, beauty, supermodels, and celebrities come together to celebrate the best in fashion."

"The most prominent fashion weeks are held in the four fashion capitals of the world: Paris, New York City, Milan, and London. Some other important fashion weeks in the world are held in Amsterdam, Bangalore, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Copenhagen, Dubai, Jakarta, Los Angeles, Madrid, São Paulo, Kuala Lumpur, Shangai, Sydney, Tokyo and Toronto."

Now for a little bit of "HATING!"

Yea, so why should everyday people like us care about Fashion Week?  Um...I don't have a real answer for that, lol.  Well actually, I like to pull inspiration from hair, beauty and clothing trends and create my own version but there is this one trend that I absolutely HATE: boxed eye liner!

WARNING: Please don't try this at home.  I'm trying to figure out if this was a mistake they just went with or if it was on purpose...  Can't wait to see what I will hate from London and Paris fashion weeks.
