So, how can I write this post without sounding insensitive, shallow and or rude???
Let's try this, my little bro has many interests but his appearance is not one of them.  For the last week, he's looked like he's rolled out of a dumpster so I had a little chat with my mother, she gave me permission to use her J.C. Penny card (with a budget of 300 bucks) and we were on our way.  After yesterday's trip, here's my advice:
  1. Go for the basics, you'll never go wrong!  We bough a few v neck t-shirts (which are technically trendy but nothing that would overwhelm him).
  2. Everyone loves jeans! All of his jeans reminded me of mom jeans so he tried on a few slim and straight leg jeans (he instantly went from MEOW)!
  3. Incorporate their personality.  Although I was aiming for a more grown-up look (he's 22), I did allow him to get the Family Guy and dinosaur shirts :/
  4. Keep the trip short! Part of the reason he was reluctant to shop with me was because he thought I would have him there all night, however, we were only there for an hour!
  5. Stroke his ego... I told him how great he looked as he tried different things on and as he walked out of the door this morning.  Maybe if he feels confident, we won't have these wardrobe issues anymore :)
7 shirts, 3 pairs of jeans, 16 pairs of socks and a belt totaled to $170 something and some change (way below our budget)!  Our next quest are shoes!
Side note: In the event you've been MIA, J.C.Penny has a lot of great clothing (and they're almost always likely to have a sale)!

Sorries, Excuses & A Few Rants

Nope, “sorries” is not a word!  So, I kind of disappeared for a day or 2…  If you’ve ever read my bio you know that I’m a student (and a graduate assistant), work full time and run a business …  Any who, I had some research due yesterday so I spent all of the day before yesterday and yesterday finishing it.  Like, I didn’t even go to bed the day before!  Nonetheless, I’m back and will probably have to keep a tighter schedule so it won’t affect you guys (in the event it did), lol.

Through my busyness I was still able to ship orders.  I actually had a lot of them yesterday.  Last week I told you guys that I would have OPI’s newest collection San Francisco in by Tuesday and it’s now available and selling very quickly.  I will probably have to restock very soon.
Also, when you purchase don’t forget the 15% off code: NAIL POLISH

"The MTV Video Music Awards saw an array of memorable fashion choices, from Lady Gaga's seashell bikini and thong (and nothing else) to Katy Perry's turtleneck leopard print dress. 8 Tricks to Make It Look Like You’re Not Wearing Makeup- Beauty High

Yep, I am def one of those individuals who put on makeup to look natural...oxymoron? Lol.

"Red lipstick is one thing, but on a regular weekday, looking like you’ve got on a full face of makeup can be synonymous with looking like you’re trying too hard. It’s not that we’re trying to hide the fact that we’re wearing lipstick, but more often than not, if you’re showing major signs of wearing a ton of makeup, people tend to focus on that fact instead of how good you look overall."  For more, visit Beauty High!

I promise to not SPAM you with daily emails.  I typically send mass emails a couple of times a month.

For Curlies: Midlife Natural Hair Crisis

Or something like that...  So, remember when I posted Product Review: Mizani's True Textures Moisture Stretch?  Then, I thought I was done and had found my perfect hair formula for minimum shrinkage (I mean, it is healthier than blowing it out every weekend).  However, I begun to notice that my hair was dry and shedding more than usual...  Turns out, Mizani is very very drying.  In their defense, it's probably why they offer a selection of products (including mositurizer).  In addition, I'm not sure if their product is for everyday use.  I like fresh curls so I usually twist or roll them every night.

Which brings me to the list of products I bought (just last week).

I was low on moisturizer and decided to buy another so I choose ORS' Coconut Oil (you can never go wrong with coconut oil). I bought mines from Walgreens for 5 bucks and some change but you should be able to get this product from almost anywhere!

Because I needed some hold (since I'm laying off Mizani), I choose Olive Oil Girls Hair Pudding.  While it does assist with manageability it too has a drying effect...  Don't know if I will use it again.

Next is Dark & Lovely's Au Naturale anti-shrinkage Curl Defining Creme Glaze.  I thought I did a Product FYI on it but I can't find it :/  Any who, I did as instructed and used on wet hair.  I usually use product on dry hair but eh... It defined my curls and reduced shrinkage (please note that reduce is the key word).  However, I still recommend it.  It's fairly cheap (10 bucks) considering it's a good product.

Last but not least is their 10-in-1 Styles Gelee.  I haven't tried this yet so I'll just put their description below:

"Our 10-In-1 Styles Gelée offers multiple styling options with crunchless firm hold in just one jar: two-strand twists, faux hawks, flat twists, coils, bantu knots, cornrows, twist-outs, braid-outs, bantu knot-outs, and coil-outs. Only a small amount is needed to achieve a frizz-controlled, elongated, defined look that lasts."

So, hopefully I'm out of this phase.  I can't afford to keep trying new hair products, lol.

How to Wear the Metallic Makeup Trend- Beauty High

From clothing to makeup, the ’90s are back in full swing. One of the most exciting trends for this fall is the return of metallics for eyes, cheeks, and lips—which we know can sound a bit daunting.

But now that we’re far past the ’90s and we’ve learned exactly what does and doesn’t work, we can successfully rock shimmery gold, silver, and jewel-toned hues on our faces and look sophisticated, to boot. Not sure where to start? Three top makeup artists explained to us which shades look best on which skin tones, how and where to apply the shiny stuff, what to pair it with and more.  For more, visit Beauty High!

Kleancolor Cosmetic's Rainbow Splendor Palette

I know, I know, such extremes!  One day I'm telling you to buy $30 foundation and the next is $1 eye shadow but I digress...

I've posted a little about Kleancolor throughout this year, I once carried their nail polish in my online store (I think I sold out of everything in May).  With that being said, I'm pretty comfortable with their brand.

The day before yesterday while picking up some items from a neighborhood hair store, I noticed a whole counter full of their eye shadow palettes.  I have one big palette from e.l.f. (e.l.f. Studio Endless Eyes Pro Eyeshadow Palette) and I have a few individuals from MAC but I love love love cheap eye shadows, lol.  Why?  It operates the same as the expensive brands when you combine it with a good primer.

Any who, I bought 2 different Rainbow Splendor Palettes (with 18 shades) for $1.99 each.  They're available at a ton of beauty stores, eBay, Amazon and Kleancolor (although their twice as much at their site).

Happy Hunting!

Product FYI: Dermablend's Smooth Indulgence Foundation SPF 20

At this point, Dermablend should hire me as a consultant, lol.  Any who, I told you guys Dillards gave me a sample of their foundation (in Product FYI: Dermablend Quick-Fix Illuminator).  It was a perfect blend and I knew I had to have it!  I also thought, if I use their foundation, do I even need concealer???  Later that day, I returned the concealer I usually use (Quick-Fix Concealer SPF 30) for their foundation.

Enough of the blah, let's get to the dirt!

"Dermablend Smooth Indulgence Foundation gives twice the coverage of a classic foundation. It's lightweight, blendable texture gives up to 16 hours of wearability with Setting Powder. The result is a radiant flawless complexion leaving skin smooth and comfortable all day long."

To minimize shine I do add a little finish powder via MAC and NYX's Matte Finish & Shine Killer I posted about earlier this month (I know this seems like a lot of steps).

So, far:
  • It's all day coverage (literally from sun up until I remove it).
  • It doesn't make my skin oily.  I use a lot of things to minimize oil (oil free moisturizer and the above NYX products).

Smooth Indulgence Foundation SPF 20 retails for $32 and is available at the usual places: Dermablend, Ulta, Sephora, Dillards.  Shop, here!

The Paleolithic (Paleo) Diet

As you guys know, I've been on a broken journey to improve how I eat while shading a couple (or 27) pounds.  While having brunch with a friend (Hi Kim) this past Sunday, she informed me that she was entering her 3rd week of the Paleo Diet.  In her first week, she lost 15 pounds!

The Paleo Diet is based upon eating wholesome, contemporary foods from the food groups our hunter-gatherer ancestors would have thrived on during the Paleolithic era, the time period from about 2.6 million years ago to the beginning of the agricultural revolution, about 10,000 years ago. These foods include fresh meats (preferably grass-produced or free-ranging beef, pork, lamb, poultry, and game meat, if you can get it), fish, seafood, fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and healthful oils (olive, coconut, avocado, macadamia, walnut and flaxseed). Dairy products, cereal grains, legumes, refined sugars and processed foods were not part of our ancestral menu.

Hunter-gatherers typically were free from the chronic illnesses and diseases that are epidemic in Western populations, including:
  • Obesity
  • Cardiovascular disease (heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, atherosclerosis)
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Autoimmune diseases (multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, etc.)
  • Osteoporosis
  • Acne
  • Myopia (nearsightedness), macular degeneration, glaucoma
  • Varicose veins, hemorrhoids, diverticulosis, gastric reflux
  • Gout

Source: The Paleo Diet

One thing I got out of our convo is that she had to make Paleo work for her and not to be so strict, which is right.  It's very hard to just cut things off, I think it's a gradual process.  Besides the weight loss, this diet should give me energy (which is something I've been lacking for a while)!

Any who, on Sunday, the boyfriend and I went grocery shopping and picked up a host of fruit and vegies.  Fingers crossed!

Product FYI: Dermablend Quick-Fix Illuminator

Yesterday, I went to Dillards because I ran out of Dermablend's Quick Fix Concealer (Read my Product FYI and Review) and I recieved a sample of Dermablend's Quick-Fix Illuminator.  I asked her to tell me a little more and after our brief convo, I decided to go ahead and buy it.

At this point, I trust dermablend products since my concealer works so well but enough of my yapping, let me tell you a little more about the product...

About Quick-Fix Illuminator "Multi-purpose concealer & Highlighter":

  • Mineral pigments provide natural coverage
  • Conceals dark circles and hides signs of fatigue

  • Illuminates + Brightens

  • Ultra-fine particples of liquid light uniformly diffuse light without artificial shine or shimmer
  • Opens up the eyes to freshen up the look
  • Softens the look of fine lines and wrinkles

  • Highlights + Sculpts

  • Reflects natural light to accentuate features
  • Brightens shadows for a revived look

  • This product retails for $25 and is available for purchase at Dermablend, Dillards, Ulta, etc.

Side note:  I was also given a sample of their foundation which I loved.  Their foundation gave so much coverage I wouldn't need their concealer if I used Dermablend (sorry MAC).  And, I hope to do a review of Dermablend's Quick-Fix Illuminator and (or) their foundation soon!
