Product Review: Big Sexy Hair's Weather Proof Humidity Resistant Spray

A couple of weeks ago, I received a sample of Big Sexy Hair's Weather Proof Humidity Resistant Spray in my monthly Ipsy subscription.  At first, I didn't want to try it.  I'm an African American with natural hair and part of the natural hair charm (in my opinion) is it's frizziness.  Helps me achieve big hair.

"Big Sexy Hair Weather Proof Humidity Resistant Spray is a high-performance humidity resistant spray that contains polymers that, when sprayed on hair, create a shield of protection against humidity. It is perfect for keeping blowouts, updo's and curls from collapsing due to climate conditions. This spray is the last step before walking out the door."

How to Use:

"Apply to finished look to repel humidity, combat frizz and maintain your style."

I've been using this spray everyday since I received it.  On day 1 it was raining and then hot and humid, however, my hair maintained it's look all day!  Although I don't mind frizziness, Mississippi's terrible humidity makes my hair experience shrinkage.  For those who don't know, shrinkage is something people with tight curls (or coils) experience.  Although my hair is past my shoulders, it shrinks to my ears :/ But, not with this product!

But...there is a con.  It's not a big con but it's a con... THIS SPRAY HAS THE WORST SMELL ON EARTH!  IT SMELLS LIKE A DUMPSTER FULL OF DIRTY PANTIES!

My recommendation... The smell only last about a minute so I say...BUY IT!  However, if you visit your local grocery, drug and makeup stores, this item retails between $14-$19!  WTF?! But, lucky for you I saw cheaper prices at Amazon.  You could probably find a sample size at Ulta.  I saw a few yesterday, I think they retailed for $6 or $8 bucks.

Happy Hunting!

Essie Will Launch Gel Polish Line This Fall

"Arriving fashionably late to the gel nail party, Essie is following the lead of OPI and Sally Hansen with the launch of Essie Gel, the brand's first LED Gel System. Designed to last 14 days, the 36-shade line will be headed to salons this October. Color names haven't been announced yet, but with such a limited selection (by Essie standards, at least), we expect to see them go heavier on perennial favorites—like the consistently best-selling Ballet Slippers—over trendier, one-season shades."

8 Makeup Looks to Never Wear on a Date

"When it comes to makeup, guys sometimes just don’t get it. But, as clueless as they may be about what we have in our stashes, they also have some big opinions on the looks they prefer women to wear. (Typical, right?) Dating can be hard enough, and your date night makeup shouldn’t be a source of stress. Between deciding on a mascara and a lip color, your makeup does actually make a difference, but there are certain pitfalls you need to avoid.

So, we asked dating coaches Adam LoDolce and Susan Trombetti to share the feedback they’ve received from their clients post-date as far as makeup goes. After chatting with them, we got some brilliant do’s and don’ts for date night makeup. Above, eight makeup looks to never wear on a date."  For more, visit Beauty High.

LOST: ONLINE BOUTIQUE from River Market's Farmer's Market

Apparently, someone snuck into my purse and stole the flyer I had with the woman (and her boutique's) info on it.  No actually, I lost it...   She has an online boutique with trendy accessories. I bought a set of rings from her Saturday at River Market's Farmer's Market.

If you're out there, email me! I want to post about your store :(

Shop Ricky's NYC

This post started as a reblog  (I usually do research on a product before I reblog) but when I visited their online store, I know I need to tell you about it!

With products ranging from professional hair care to temporary tattoos, Ricky's NYC's eclectic offerings make headlines and grace the pages of major beauty publications every month. When this store says it has everything, they're not lying!  He has all the popular brands you usually have to travel to Ulta, Sephora or department stores to get but this store is like a cyber beauty store with a bit of umph!

He even has his own items which include accessories, nail polish and brushes (read Style Blazer's article on his brushes, here).

And, free shipping on $50 or more?!  Who can beat that?  Visit one of his 28 store locations, here or shop online, here! And read the New York Times article on Ricky, here!

Side note: Don't you love how I keep calling him Ricky as if I know him, lol.

The Best At Home Pedicure Tips For Great Feet

"Being that summer lends itself to wearing sandals and walking barefoot, especially at the beach,  it’s not exactly the best time for your feet. Between calluses, blisters and just plain cracked skin, summer is not the time to skimp on pedicures. Plus, if your feet are looking less than ideal, wearing sandals can become embarrassing, and no one wants to feel self conscious in flip flops.

While it’s a given that we don’t always have the time or money to go out and get a pedicure, we know how important it is to maintain your feet. So, in an effort to help, we’ve put together a list of our favorite at home pedicure products, plus tips on how to use them. Read, enjoy and treat your feet to some TLC."  For more, visit Beauty High!

My Weekend Review: Road Trip to Little Rock

I haven't done a weekend review in ages!  So, this past weekend, the boyfriend and I took a road trip to Little Rock, Arkansas.  Some of you may be thinking, why Little Rock?  Well, it was his 30th birthday weekend and that's where he choose to go.

DISCLAIMER: I do a little ranting so if you want to hear about shopping, skip straight to that area!

Little Rock is approximately 5 hours from Jackson so it's both close and far enough for a weekend getaway.  However, I have to admit... I don't hear much about Little Rock and never had the desire to go there, lol.  In my head, I was thinking: "why would we leave one small town to go to another..."  But boy was I wrong!

Our hotel was located in the River Market District so we had access to numerous museums, restaurants and the Arkansas River of course!  We visited the River Market's Farmers Market, partook in the local cuisine (I gained approximately 33 pounds this weekend, lol), skipped over to the Clinton Museum (where I saw an Oscar de la Renta exhibit), walked the pedestrian bridge over the Big Dam Bridge, visited a local comedy club, and took a ride on streetcar (which crossed the Arkansas River, yikes).  Although this trip was not about me, I got to check out the local shopping scene.

SHOPPING: Hillcrest Neighborhood & Kavanaugh Blvd.

Little Rock has a lot of shopping areas but a fair amount includes your typical retail chains.  The Hillcrest Neighborhood and Kavanaugh Blvd included salons, restaurants and cute boutiques.

E. Leigh's was the first I noticed.  I'm not sure of the retail prices because the store was about to
close (and from retail experience, I know employees hate when someone walks in 15 minutes to close).  If you see something you like, on their page, you can start a shopping account and order via phone.  Visit their Facebook page, here!

Ember is boutique and self proclaimed "shopping haven."

"Everything about your shopping experience at Ember is intended to be effortless and fun, from our easy to wear styles, to our laid back and friendly service, to our gentle-on-the-budget price points."

Both apparel and accessories retails between $28 and $78 bucks!  Shop, here!

River Market's Farmer Market also had a ton of clothing and accessories.  There were two I liked the
most.  One had a lot of handmade jewelry for piercings, toe rings and ear cuffs.  Another is an online boutique that I will post about tomorrow.

I had a great time out there, so much that I have added it to the list of places I want to relocate once I'm done with school.

See you soon Little Rock!

Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Blush & Bronzer Duo

"Much like peanut butter and jelly, cookies and milk, and wings and hot sauce, blush and bronzer are another duo that work better together. Bronzer (better applied in a backwards “E” motion from the temples to the hollows of the cheeks to along the jawline) gives you a pretty sunkissed glow, but you know what really sets that off? A peachish-pink blush on the cheeks. That’s the kind of glow all the hot starlets have for strutting the red carpet."  For more, visit STYLEBLAZER!

Makeup 101: Tips, Dips & Twists

So, this post started as a list for my friend (Hi Kim) but I thought I would go ahead and post it for any beginners and curious cats out there.

Step 1: Purchase the essentials.  This includes but is not limited to foundation, lipstick (both red and nude), lipgloss (pink would be awesome), foundation (I prefer powder), eyeliner (lets start with black), mascara, primer, moisturizer (something you should already have), eyebrow pencil (if necessary) and makeup remover!

Step 2: Start at your local drugstore.  You should work your way up to expensive brands (if you think it's needed).  When you're starting out, you don't need to spend $50 on concealer.  I mean you don't know how to actually use it, lol.  If you feel like you have slightly upgraded from drug stores, try Ulta or Target.

Step 3: Lighting is essential.  The lighting in my apartment sucks!  During the week, I wait until I get to work because there is really good lighting in the bathroom, lol.  Lighting allows you to see any possible flaws and correct them!  Because all of you can't come to my job and put on your makeup, try purchasing a cheap magnifying mirror from Walmart.  I bought one for 20 bucks but I need to change the batteries, lol.

Step 4: Primer and moisturizer is important.  For some people (with great skin), moisturizer and primer is enough.  But for the rest of us, it makes your skin looks smooth, feel healthy and prepare it for makeup.  For those with oily skin, try oil free moisturizer.

Step 5: Blending with your finger is cool but brushes and sponges are better.  For years, I blended concealer and eye shadow with my finger.  However, you need to determine if you want to look like a kindergartner or a woman...  See where I'm going with this? Lol.

Step 6: Cat eye is great for all occasions.  Nothing makes you look all fancy like the swipe of a liquid eye pencil... I mean it dresses up every and all looks!

Step 7: Brows are apart of makeup too! If they aren't manicured, you should purchase a brow pencil.  Fill in and fill out but don't go overboard.  Learn about that, here!

Step 8: Try beauty and makeup counters.  These people are going to help you because they want you to purchase a product so they can make their quota for the day, lol.

Step 9: YouTube is your friend.  Actually, it's your very best friend.  There are a TON of beauty volggers that will walk you through the process.

Step 10: Remove that makeup!  You don't want breakouts, read about how I deal with that, here!

Understand your just starting out... You won't be Bobbi Brown because you bought eye shadow and concealer.

5 Products To Help Protect Your Hair From The Sun

"We’re always talking about how important it is to wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun, but it’s also important to protect your coif from harmful UV rays as well. Why? Well for one, they can dry out the hair causing breakage and damage. And if you spent a good chunk of change (or time DIY-ing) to color your hair, you want to protect it from fading."  For more, visit STYLEBLAZER!

Product FYI: RGB & Jenna Hipp Nail Polishes

Jenna Hipp is described as a "world renowned celebrity green nail stylist."

She has both nail polish and hand collections with the most awesome colors!

Hipp has also teamed with RGB to produce HIPPxRGB which retails for $18!  It's safe to say that this nail polish is an accessory, lol.  In an article written by THE CUT, some of the colors (mostly nude) are considered "primer, foundation and blush for the nails."  Shop their collection, here!

"RGB launched in 2009 with the RGB Ten collection : ten iconic colors with a modern edge.  Each shade was RGB’s sharp take on a classic with a straightforward name to match.  RGB curates color for you.  Staying true to the well-edited launch, RGB introduces new shades for every collection, and pulls from timeless archived colors of collections’ past to complete a new library of color each season.

RGB’s formula removes harmful carcinogens often found in nail color.  The chip-resistant and high shine Five Free Formula contains no Formaldehyde, Toluene, DBP (dibutyl phthalate), Formaldehyde Resin, or Camphor.

RGB was created by founder Gina Carney.  With a background in fashion, a taste for minimalism, and devotion to green beauty, she brought all her passions together in creating RGB Nail Color & Care."

Shop RGB's collection, here!

If you haven't noticed by now, there isn't a link to purchase Jenna Hipp's nail polish.  I don't know if you have to be apart of some super secret sorority or travel to Hogwarts (that's a Harry Potter reference)!  However, I did see that you can buy the collection from Costco and ebay.  I've seen a few pictures on the web and apparently it retailed for as little as $15 to as much as $32.

If anyone has walked across hot coal or swim across the Atlantic Ocean to purchase this polish, let me know!

First, I want to say that most people can't afford to be fashionistas.  Even if we could, would you want to follow every trend?

While I don't consider myself a fashionista nor an expert, I think I put in more effort than the average person.  After years of experience, being broke and scouring fashion magazines, I've come up with this list...
1. Spend money on functional items.  I don't mind spending $100 on shoes or a purse because it will likely serve as an item I can wear everywhere!  By everywhere I mean work, a party, a wedding, church, etc.  This also goes for dresses.  Yesterday, I wore a lace dress with the back cut out during happy hour with a friend (hey Vee!) but earlier, I had that same dress on with a belt and blazer at work!

2. Buy pieces that never go out of style!  This includes but is not limited to a black purse, pumps in black and or red, a black blazer, a white t-shirt and button down, a pair of skinny jeans, a little black dress, a pair of booties in black or brown, a wrap dress, a black belt (I prefer skinny belts), basic studs and hoops, a string of pearls (I have fake ones, lol), a statement necklace, a pencil skirt (preferably black), red lipstick, black eyeliner (for a fierce cat eye), a scarf (my go-to scarf is leopard and can be worn in summer and winter), pea coat, clutch, a leather jacket (or faux leather), fedora (one that transitions through summer and winter), and hair wrap or headband (I'm talking Gossip Girl)!

3. Nail polish can be an accessory too!  Of course I would throw this in.  Some days, I'm OK with not wearing jewelry and my makeup is a bit nude because I have an awesome manicure!  I typically get my polish from Pink Gumbeaux Nail Polish Boutique!  Shameless plug? Lol.

4.  Have one WOW dress that you can wear to special events.  Almost 3 years ago, I bought a sequence dress from Dillard's Juniors Department.  It's fitted and cut low in the back.  I've worn it to a wedding, New Years Eve party and other events.  All I do is change the purse, shoes, and sometimes add a belt and or blazer.

5. Try Vintage, Consignment & Thrift Stores.  These stores are a sure way to find items you wouldn't find anywhere else... I found 2 dresses and a trench from Saks at an consignment store.  It didn't cost me over 30 bucks for all 3 items!  Another advantage is bringing in your old items and making some extra cash!  You may earn $5.33 for 20 items but every penny counts :)

Well there you have it!  For a person who is into fashion but technically defined as "the working poor", this is how I do it!  I don't have a ton of shoes and not more than a handful of purses yet people constantly compliment me on my outfits (thats actually recycled and its very likely that I wore it a week or so prior, lol).

See anything I missed?  Let me know!

Karen's Body Beautiful Product Review

50 Beauty Rules to Break

"We all tend to unconsciously live by a self-taught set of rules, buying new products that fit the bill and staying within our comfort zones. Unfortunately, that can get a little boring, especially because today’s makeup is all about freedom, experimentation and finding what works for you. Keeping that in mind, we didn’t want to give you the same over-covered, outdated “redheads can wear red lipstick” advice that you’ve seen before. Hot off the presses, instead we took a look at everything from runway looks to ’90s revivals to find out where the industry’s headed, conventional or not. Beauty waits for no man’s rules, so here are 50 to break."  For more, visit Beauty High!

What We're Sweet On: Simple, Pure Olive Oil Soap

"You cook with it, and you clean with it; you even slather your dry heels in it. We already know olive oil is a kitchen and bathroom staple, and luckily Kiss My Face makes it even easier to use with its much-loved Pure Olive Oil Bar Soap ($3). Ultragentle and softening, this no-scent bar works up into a moderate lather on skin. And because it's so pure — no artificial colors or harsh chemicals here — skin is left moisturized and supple, not dry, taut, or greasy. It's as simple as that. Kiss that irritated skin goodbye."

Side note: I use this soap! I get mines from Kroger but its 4 bucks and some change! It's $2.99 on Kiss My Face's website!  Damn you Kroger!

Just a Few Blog Changes...

You may have noticed that I've made a few changes...  First, I added my twitter timeline so you can view my tweets about nothing and even get in on all the fun, lol.

Secondly, I moved all blog related stuff to the top.  This is a blog first so I want to make sure you have easy access to top posts, the search bar and archive.

And, for the shoppers, I added a shopping tool (directly under the archive).  View almost 200,000 shoes, clothes and accessories from multiple stores!  Some are as cheap as 20 bucks while others are too expensive to mention, lol.

OK guys, if you've been with me for at least a year, you'll know I'm trying to get my body right.  As of now, I'm starting to be more concerned with my health than weight.  For the last couple of months, I've been very sluggish and I know that can be directly linked to my diet.  Here's to hoping my fridge can look like Shameless Maya's!

Trend To Try: Shop 8 Sheer Skirts

Disclaimer: this article is posted to provide you with ideas so you can find a cheaper alternative. I would not encourage you to spend over 50 bucks... and for shear?  No way, lol.

"Sheer has become a top contender this season when it comes to summer trends. But this time around, instead of the expected inserts in tops, the lightweight fabric has worked its way down to skirts! Showing up on red carpets everywhere, completely sheer bottoms have given this major summer staple an added level of s*x appeal. Whether accompanied with embroidery, prints or paired with hot pants, this trend doesn’t leave a lot to the imagination."  For more, visit STYLEBLAZER!

Nails wraps ARE the new nail polish!  Every time I look up, I find out about a new nail wrap so I figured I'll combine 2 of them today.

INCOCO's Appliques are the newest nail wraps I've tried and they are currently my favorite (Sephora's is right behind them).  Like a few of the popular nail wrap brands, INCOCO also offers pedicure appliques!

"Not only does Incoco save your fingernails from all the hassles of liquid nail polish, but our pedicure strips save your feet from that messy liquid as well! Incoco color pedicures come in a range of pretty hues that will have your toes twinkling with delight as soon as you apply them! You are sure to appreciate not having to wait for your toes to dry after this pedicure."

Their pedicure appliques retail at $7.99, shop HERE!

Jamberry Nail Shields

"The story of Jamberry Nails begins with three sisters who possess distinct personal tastes, but share a love for style. After an expensive afternoon together at the nail salon, Lyndsey, Christy and Keri vowed to find a simpler, more cost effective way to keep their hands looking polished, while still spending time together."

One thing I find interesting about Jamberry is that you can actually become a consultant for them and design your own wraps!  How cool is that?

Jamberry retails at $15 (which is probably the most expensive I've seen) and comes in NUMEROUS colors and styles.  SHOP!

July Ipsy Bag

Guess who finally made in appearance?  The July Ipsy Bag!

Its contents...

BH Cosmetic's California Collection Eye Shadow Pallet
Pop Beauty's Pouty Pop Crayon in Coral Crush
Big Sexy Hair's Water Proof Humidity Resistant Spray
COOLA's Mineral Sunscreen Moisturizer
Nailtini Nail Polish in Lacquer 107

My Review:

First, this bag is my new makeup bag.  I thought the crayon would be my favorite but I didn't like how it looked.  It looks matte but feels like a lipstick or gloss.  Weird...  I love nail polish so I was happy to get it.  Moving on, I'm curious about the hair spray.  As an African American with natural hair, I don't do Big Sexy Hair products but since it fights humidity, I will try it.  Mississippi is humid and New Orleans is worse so it may come in handy.  I have moisturizer with SPF so I'm not going to try COOLA.  Don't want to mix chemicals and have a breakout; however, it's organic so it may not be so bad.

Overall, I didn't like this bag, lol.  However the subscription is 10 bucks and it's a good way to find out about new products.  I'm still on board and if you're interested, subscribe here!
